Tellurium

Tellurium is a byproduct of copper mining and lead refining, which is silver-white metalloid and

brittle, when pure exhibits a metallic luster. Its symbol is Te and atomic number 52. Tellurium

adopts a polymeric structure, consisiting of zig-zag chains of Te atoms. This gray material resists

oxidation by air and is nonvolatile. Tellurium is chemically related to selenium and sulfur. It burns

in air with a greenish-blue flame and forms white tellurium dioxide. Its demand grows along with

solar energy expand.

Tellurium is a semiconductor material and is slightly photosensitive. When alloyed with cooper

and stainless steel, it would make these metal more workable. When added a little to lead, it

decreases the corrosive action of sulfuric acid in batteries and to improve the lead’s strength and

hardness. Tellurium could be used in ceramics as a coloring agent. It is also used in electronics

industry, for example with cadmium and mercury to form photosensitive semiconductors.

Cadmium Telluride (CdTe) is used as a thin film in solar panel to convert sunlight into electricity.

CdTe panels have an efficiency rating of between 11 and 13 percent compared to amorphous

silicon solar panels which have an efficiency of between 7 to 9 percent. It is used in vulcanizing

rubber and in catalysts for petroleum cracking and in blasting caps for explosives.

Tellurium is very toxic and teratogenic (can cause harm to developing embryos). Exposure to as

little as 0.01 mg/m-2 or less in air leads to “tellurium breath”, which has a garlic-like odor.

application :Mainly apply to fabrication of Ⅱ-Ⅵ group compound semiconductors, solar cell,

thermoelectric converting elements, semiconductor refrigerator, gas sensor, temperature sensor,

pressure sensor, photosensitizer, piezoelectric crystal, nuclear radiation probing and infrared

detector etc. Its conductivity increases slightly with exposure to light which makes many tellurides

candidates for solar energy applications. tellurium improves the machinability of copper and

stainless steel, and tis addition to lead decrease the corrosive action of sulfuric acid on lead and

improves its straight and hardness. Tellurium is used as a basic ingredient in blasting caps, and is

added to cast iron for chill control. Tellurium is used in ceramics.

Bismuth

Bismuth is a metal in period 6 of the nitrogen group and is a metal.It is a

white,crystalline, brittle metal with pinkish tinge. It is a pentavalent poor metal,which

chemically resembles arsenic and antimony. It is the most diamagnetic of all metals,

and the thermal conductivity is lower than any metal except mercury. It has a high

electrical resistance, and has the highest Hall effect of any metal. When deposited in

sufficiently thin layer on substrate, bismuth is a semiconductor ,rather than a poor

metal. It reacts with acids, but not with cold water.It expands 3.32% on

solidification.This property makes bismuth alloys particular suited to the making of

sharp casting of objects subject to damage by high temperatures.

Bismuth metal is used in the manufacture of low melting solders and fusible alloys as

well as low toxicity bird shot and fishing sinkers. With other metals, such as tin,

cadmium, etc., bismuth forms low-melting alloys, such as Wood’s metal, that are

extensively used for electrical fuses and safety devices used in fire detection and

extinguishing systems, for example in fire sprinkler heads.Certain bismuth

compounds are also manufactured and used as pharmaceuticals.Industry makes use of

bismuth compounds as catalysts in manufacturing acrylonitrile, the starting material

for synthetic fiber and rubbers. Bismuth is sometimes used in the production of shot

and shotgun.

Vanadium

Vanandium is a rare, soft, ductile and malleable transition gray-white metal. It have

good corrosion resisitance to alkalis, sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and salt

waters.Vanadium resists coorosion due to a protective film of oxide on the surface.

The metal oxidizes readily above 660 celsius to form vanadium pentoxide.

Nearly 80% of the vanadium produced is used to make ferrovanadium or as an

additive to steel. Ferrovanadium is a strong, shock resistant and corrosion resisitant

alloy of iron containing between 1% and 6% vanadium. Ferrovanadium and

vanadium-steel alloys are used to make such things as axles. Crankshafts and gears

for cars, parts of jet engines, spring and cutting tools. Vanadium alloy are also used in

nuclear reactors because vanadium has low neutron-adsorption abilities and it doesn’t

deform in creeping under high temperature. Vanadium is corrosion resistant and is

sometimes used to make special tubes and pipes for the chemical industry.

Vanadium Pentoxide is perhaps vanadium’s most useful compound. It is used as a

mordant, a material which permanently fixes dyes to fabrics. Vanadium pentoxide is

also used as catalyst in manufacturing sulfuric acid and maleic anhydride and in

making ceramics. Vanadium pentoxide can be mixed with gallium to form

superconductive magnets. It could be added to glass to produce green and blue tint.

Glass coated with vanadium dioxide can block infrared radiation at some specific

temperature.

Solid gallium is a blue-gray metal with orthorhombic crystalline structure; very pure

gallium has a stunning silvery color. Gallium is solid at normal room temperatures,

but as well as mercury, cesium, and rubidium it becomes liquid when heated slightly.

Solid gallium is soft enough to be cut with a knife. If it is held in the human hand long

enough, gallium will melt. It is stable in air and water; but it reacts with and dissolves

in acid and alkalis. Gallium metal expand by 3.1% when it solidifies, and therefore

storge in either glass or metal containers is avoided, due to the possibility of container

rupture with freezing. Gallium shares the higher-density liquid state with only few

materials like silicon, germanium, bismuth and water. Gallium does not easily

combine with other elements.

Liquid gallium wets porcelain and glass surfaces; it forms a bright, highly reflective

surface when coated on glass. It can be used to create brilliant mirror. Gallium easily

alloys with most metals, so it is used to form low-melting alloys. The plutonium pits

of nuclear weapons employ an alloy with gallium to stabilize the allotropes of

plutonium. Analog integrated circuits are the most common application for gallium,

with optoelectronic devices (mostly laser diodes and light-emitting diodes) as the

second largest end use. Gallium has semiconductor properties, especially as gallium

arsendite(GaAs). It is able to change electricity directly into laser light. Gallium is

used in some high temperature thermometers.
