An ideal spot to watch for forest fires... Fire guard Giuseppe Sciocatti in front of his home at Spitskop. Giuseppe was a descendant of Domenico Sciocatti, one of a group of Ital- ians who were brought to Knysna to begin a silk industry in this. It was an ill-conceived scheme, and many of the immigrants went on to work in the timber industry. (There’s more about the ‘Silk spinners of Gouna’ on our boards at the San Ambroso Chapel Museum.)
