INTRODUCTION

Miles of gigantic horizon, sand mounds, scorching heat,nomadic life and that too with a camel safari, this is whatdeserts of Rajasthan look like. Deserts of rajasthan are mainlyspread over Jaisalmer, Barmer, Bikaner and Jodhpur.

Their eloquent history and never changing dynamics have surely a catch of eye among sightseers around the globe.

World famous Thar Desert is spread over huge area of more than 446000 sq kms

and being the 9th largest tropical desert in the world, it is one of the most sought after tourist

place in India.

• Thar Desert or the Great Indian Desert encompasses about 70%

of total landmass of Rajasthan and hence it is identified as the

"Desert State of India". The Thar Desert embraces the districts

of Jaisalmer, Barmer, Bikaner and Jodhpur.

• Rajasthan Desert comprises the three cities - Jaisalmer, Bikaner

and Jodhpur which is commonly known as the desert triangle.

• The Rajasthan desert is predominantly characterized by three

landforms- sand dunes, plains and hills

• Rajasthan desert is a greater part of the Thar Desert that is spread

across the western part of India and the southeastern Pakistan.

• The desert in Rajasthan is bounded by the Sutlej River in the

northwest, the Aravali mountains in the east and the salty

marshland of the Rann of Kutch in the south and the Indus River

in the west.

• The climate varies throughout rajasthan.

• In the west, rajasthan is relatively dry and fertile.

• In the southwest part of the state, the land is wetter, hilly and more fertile.

• On average winter temperature range from 8 to 28 degree C

• Summer temperature range from 25 C to 46 C

• Average rainfall also varies, the western desert accumulate about 100mm

• Annually.

• While south-eastern part receives 650 mm

CLIMATE

• Vegetation in the desert region is limited to very slow growing stunted trees, thorny shrubs and some grasses. The other natural vegetation type in Rajasthan is ephemeral, occurring only during the monsoon season.

• kejri (prosopis cineraria) is the most prolific and an all purpose tree of the desert arid zone and its bean shaped fruit, sangri, is eaten as vegetable and used as fodder. The ker fruit is also eaten as vegetable and it has strong and durable wood.

• The faunal wealth of the Rajasthan presents a vivid spectrum ranging from mammals and reptiles to bird life. Antelopes and gazelles are found in most of the regions of Rajasthan. Black buck (kala hiran) promintently inhabit the Jodhpur region and the small herds of Indian gazelle (chinkara) are found in the sandy deserts

• Desert of Jodhpur is set at the edge of Thar Desert in Rajasthan.

Bhavan Palace and Jaswant Thada.

• Jodhpur Desert festival expresses culture and traditions of Rajasthan. The most

dunes, approx 40 Km far from Jaisalmer is the best way to explore

the Great Indian Desert

through the country, making the remote parts of the various

states accessible.

By Road : The state of Rajasthan can boast of a well connected

road network considering the connectivity of the state through

several state highways and national highways. About 1,50,876 km

of road network runs across the state of Rajasthan. The national

highways link Rajasthan with the states of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh,

Gujarat, and Maharashtra
