East Beach Cafe – Little Hampton
Designer
Thomas Heather wick
The East Beach Cafe as being a place of “prospect and refuge” with generous views of the sea and beach and a cozy atmosphere, whatever the weather.
Description
• The East Beach Café is a long, south facing single storey building of shallow depth.
• The complex contours of the rear of the building have a powerful sculptural quality, the intensity of detail and shadow changing with every nuance of light and sun.
DESIGN PROCESS
• Being voted one of the top ten coolest places to visit by Vogue magazine
• It works on a sunny day when all the full height doors can be open and the eating area becomes an extension of the beach, and it works at night when diners feel protected from the wind and darkness.
Sitting arrangements are made facing East
As a sculptural building it responds brilliantly to the site; the intricate geometry provides an ever changing delight as the shadows and shapes shift with the light and exacts the sort of visceral response from the spectator that one expects from all great art.

By using local lobster fisherman rafts with tires, Scheeren created a floating screen and a separate platform for the audience to sit back, relax and enjoy the show.
A screen, nestled somewhere between the rocks. And the audience… floating
One question running through my mind.
