What are favelas?
• ‘Favela’ is the Brazilian word that is used to describe shanty towns, or squatter settlements
• People move to these areas from the countryside around Brazil
• This is the worst form of urbanisation- people end up living in very bad conditions with a poor quality of life.
Why does urbanisation happen?
• What are the factors that ‘push’ them away from this type of countryside?
• This is in the Caatinga, a semi-arid area to the NE of Brazil
• Make a list of push factors in your book- title: ‘push factors from the Brazilian countryside’
