There a many ways to get to London: by plane, ferry, car and train (via the Channel tunnel, arriving at Waterloo station). The biggest airport is Heathrow. Stansted is the airport where low-cost carriers like Ryan Air land.

From Stansted you can take the train which takes you to Liverpool Street Station or take a coach to Victoria station (the latter option being much cheaper).

The currency is the British pound. 1£ = 100 p(ence) (most often pronounced:

one pea). A 1p coin is called a “penny”, which you might offer to learn somebody's thoughts (“Penny for your thoughts!”).

London is one of the top most expensive cities in the world. A pint of beer costs about £ 3 in Central London. If you are a smoker, you’d better quit before going to London. You might pay £6 for a pizza or a portion of fish’n’chips.

Even though London is pretty expensive there are ways to save money. For example, state museums are free (including the Natural History and Science museums – check out our links). Chinese food is fairly cheap. And you can save a lot of money if you buy your drinks and sandwiches in supermarkets.

London has much more to offer than Big Ben, Tower Bridge and Madame Tussaud’s . There is much more to see than you can possibly do in a week.

You might spend a whole day in the British Museum alone (and it’s free!).

Our tip for a day trip: take the boat to Greenwich and spend the day there (most things there are free as well!). If you go at the weekend you can experience the busy market as well.

London markets are fantastic (Portobello, Camden Town, Convent Garden, Greenwich) are fantastic and the best time to visit them is on Saturdays .
