NewsHour Past
• Started in 2007 when Aaron Adler was working in an orphanage in the forest region of Ghana
• Aaron invited the older children in the orphanage to watch the news with him and other volunteers, and then asked them to talk about it
• To ensure participation, he had to create a safe, accepting, and casual environment– i.e. Adults help steer the conversation, but don’t interject
their opinions!
www.teachonthebeach.org
NewsHour Present
• The safe environment helped the program grow and grab the interest of the children
• Today, many of the same students are still doing NewsHour daily, improving listening, note-taking, speaking and writing abilities
• NewsHour is now a weekly program at:– Bishop Luers High School in Ft Wayne, IN– Seaholm High School in Birmingham, MI
