El Alcázar de los Condestables constituye el símbolo de Medina de Pomar. Su perfil, al romper el horizonte,es lo primero que observa el visitante de la ciudad. Susinmensas proporciones permiten una idea del poderío dela familia que lo mandó construir.

The Alcázar de los Condestables symbolises Medinade Pomar. Its imposing outline on the horizon is thefirst thing the visitor sees. Its massive proportionsprovide an idea of the power wielded by the familythat commissioned its construction.

Una ciudad con un glorioso pasado entre cuyas casonas, iglesias y monaste-rios el viajero puede descubrir también un rico patrimonio tradicional y cultural.

Junto con el Alcázar de los Condestables, en cuyo interior se halla el MuseoHistórico de Las Merindades, sobresale el Santuario de Nuestra Señora delRosario, antiguamente llamada Santa María del Salcinal, citada ya en los Fuerosotorgados a Medina de Pomar por Alfonso VII en calidad de iglesia juradera.

También extramuros de la ciudad se alza el Monasterio de Santa Clara, cuyoselecto museo de arte religioso custodia, entre otras valiosas piezas, un CristoYacente, de Gregorio Fernández y una obra de Hendrick de Clerck. FueronSancho Sánchez de Velasco y su esposa, Sancha García, quienes lo fundaron:fue el año 1313. Destaca la Capilla de la Concepción, cuya bóveda constituyeuna obra de interés arquitectónico, la rejería que la da acceso desde la capillamayor y la sacristía.

Junto a Santa Clara se localizan los restos de la antigua ermita de San Millán,el edificio religioso más antiguo de cuantos se conservan en Medina de Pomary por ello de gran contenido simbólico. Se trata de una construcción románicade la que se conserva la nave y el ábside, y que data de finales del siglo XII.Su interior alberga el Centro de Interpretación del Arte Románico de Las Merindades.

La actual parroquia, Santa Cruz, está presidida por un valioso retablo realizadoentre los siglos XV y XVI y que procede de la iglesia del cercano pueblo deSalinas de Rosío.

A town whose glorious past is reflected by its noble houses, churches and convents – amongst which visitors can discovera rich traditional and cultural heritage.

Alongside the Alcázar de los Condestables, which now houses the Las Merindades History Museum, are otheroutstanding monuments. These include the Santuario de Nuestra Señora del Rosario, formerly known as Santa Maríadel Salcinal, mention of which is made in the Charter granted to Medina de Pomar by King Alphonse VII.

Also lying outside what were once the walls of the town is the Convent of Santa Clara whose museum of religious artcontains, amongst other valuable works, a Reclining Christ by Gregorio Fernández and a piece by Hendrick de Clerck.The Convent was founded in 1313 by Sancho Sánchez de Velasco and his wife, Sancha García. Highlights include theChapel of the Conception who’s vaulted ceiling is of particular architectural interest as is the ironwork that separates itfrom the main chapel and the sacristy.

Next to Santa Clara stands what is left of the ancient hermitage of San Millán. This is the oldest religious building of themany still standing in Medina de Pomar and is therefore highly symbolic. This Romanesque structure dates back to theend of the 12th century but now only the nave and the apse remain. Today it houses the Las Merindades RomanesqueArt Interpretation Centre.

The current parish church, Santa Cruz, is dominated by a valuable 15th or 16th century altarpiece that was once housedin the church of the nearby village of Salinas de Rosío.

More than 200 kilometres of signposted footpaths and trailsenable visitors to really get to know the area around Medinade Pomar – one of the largest districts in the province ofBurgos. It is a wooded area full of surprises that can provefascinating to those visiting for the first time.

Su biodiversidad se manifiesta en forma de bosques, pastiza-les, labrantíos y las riberas de sus tres ríos principales: el Nela,el Trueba y el Salón. Multitud de recursos tradicionales: moli-nos, las primeras centrales hidroeléctricas, trampas para cazarlobos, despoblados, ermitas y todo un elenco de posibilidadespara la práctica de la BTT, la equitación y el senderismo.

The biodiversity manifests itself in the form of forests, pastures, arable landand the banks of its three main rivers: the Nela, Trueba and Salón. In addi-tion, there are a whole host of traditional resources: watermills, the firsthydroelectric power stations, wolf hunting traps, abandoned villages andhermitages. And the area has all manner of terrain that’s perfect for moun-tain biking, horse riding and trekking.

We invite you to explore the historic old town of Medina de Pomar, stroll throughthe narrow streets of medieval origin, between the grand houses with their coats-of-arms, visit the gates that once provided the only access to the town and gaze atthe size of is fortress. Somovilla Square, the current nerve centre of the town (1) isthe perfect place from which to start a pleasant urban stroll.

Medina de Pomar es mucho más. Es uno de los municipios más extensos de la provin-cia de Burgos y en su jurisdicción se hallan numerosos pueblos y barrios que destacanpor la calidad de sus paisajes y su arquitectura tradicional.

La mayor parte de ellos aún conservan los primitivos hornos con los que sus vecinoscocieron su pan hasta bien entrado el siglo XX, los molinos en los que molieron sugrano, los potros donde herraron a sus caballos... son pueblos de detalles curiosos, sin-gulares...

Algunos incluso cuentan con verdaderos tesoros custodiados en sus iglesias. Sirvan deejemplo los casos de Rosales y Torres de Medina; el primero por su interesante pilabautismal románica y el segundo por el magnífico retablo que preside la iglesia de SanAndrés. A buen seguro que ninguno les dejará indiferente.

Medina de Pomar is much, much more. It is one of the largest municipal districts in the province of Burgos andthe administrative centre for many villages and districts famous for the beauty of their landscapes and traditio-nal architecture.

Most of the outlying villages still have their ancient ovens in which residents baked their bread until well intothe 20th century, the mills in which they ground their grain and the forges where they shod their horses... villa-ges full of unusual, unique details...

Some of their churches boast true treasures. Good examples of this are the villages of Rosales and Torres deMedina; the first for its unusual Romanesque baptismal font and the second for the magnificent altarpiece thattakes pride of place in San Andrés church. The visitor cannot fail to be impressed!.
