Believe it or not … there are many haunted sites in this relatively young but historic town.

HAUNTED SITES – INLET TO 4TH STREET

FISHING CAMPSThese camps were the first draw to Ocean City.

The ghosts of old fisherman haunt some of these old camps.

LIFE SAVING STATION

Stations were located about every 10 miles on the beach.

Rescued passengers from shipwrecks off the coast.

The Henry Hotel – “Colored Hotel” during segregation of races.

1875 - ATLANTIC HOTEL – when first built – 400 roomsThe first HUGE tourist draw to Ocean City.

1895 – Elevated Boardwalk 1892 – Trimper’s Opens

1878 – Railroad comes

NEW ATLANTIC HOTEL - In the early 1900s the hotel WAS the destination. Guests had their meals and entertainment at the

hotel.

This Laughing Sal is in the OC Life Saving Station Museum.

She laughs when she wants to… at all hours.

THE Tarry-A-WhileHas a ghost who smokes cigarettes

THE LODGE – TRIMPER’SGranville Trimper has been seen (and felt) on

the basement floor of the Lodge by some of the workers who knew him. He “fixes” things.

THE TRIMPERS CAROUSELIt was put in place in 1902 and has been in the same spot since – at times flood waters have reached the

knees of the carousel horses.

THE TRIMPERS CAROUSELEach animal was handcrafted by German

Woodcarvers.

THE TRIMPERS CAROUSELTrimpers employs an artists skilled in historical

art to maintain the antique rides.

THE TRIMPERS CAROUSELIt’s the oldest continually operational carousel

in America.

THE TRIMPERS CAROUSELThe perfume of Joanne Trimper sometimes

lingers around the carousel. She loved the Carousel – this white horse was

named “Forever Joanne” in her honor.

THE TRIMPERS CAROUSELJoanne was from Sharptown but loved Ocean

City and Trimper’s Rides – particularly the

carousel.

THE TRIMPERS CAROUSELGranville Trimper had the Carousel

etched onto the memorial when Joanne died. The center horse shown is

“Forever Joanne.”

DR. CHARLES PURNELL• Bought the Atlantic Hotel in

1925• Burned down months later• Rebuilt in 6 months• Still owned by the Purnells

Dr. Purnell is frequently seen about the hotel – on the stairs, in the lobby, walking the halls.

THE ATLANTIC HOTELStill retains its charm and is thick with

memories of the past.

THE BELMONT HOTELLocated in a section of town where women had

a huge influence in the hotel / hospitality industry.

THE AVONDALESusie Rounds took over this hotel when the owners were too

distraught when a 3 year old girl fell to her death from a 3rd story window. Susie owned 2 other hotels including the Majestic.

THE HOTEL NORDICAOpera singer hung herself from chandelier.

THE PLINHIMMON HOTEL1st hotel built by a woman – Rosalie Tilghman Shreve. Later the Plim Plaza was built on this

site.

THE PLIM PLAZA

RANDY HOFFMAN SCULPTURERandy has been sculpting Bible scenes in the sand just off the Boardwalk for 20 years. He says, “God told him to.” Randy has distributed over 800,000 pamphlets to castle admirers on the

Boardwalk.
