The São Bento Station is located at Praça Almeida Garret. The name of the station comes from a Benedictine monastery (São Bento do Ave Maria) built on this spot in the 16th century. The construction of the rail station started in 1900 and it was inaugurated in 1916. The architect of the project was Jose Marques da Silva, and he created a building with the French Beaux-Arts architecture. The building is famous for its marvelous tile works in the main hall. There are about 20,000 tiles that show the history of transport and Portugal. The artist was Jorge Colaço and date from 1916. One panel of tiles show the arrival of King John I and and Queen Philippa of Lancaster in Porto (1387). Another shows Prince Henry the Navigator conquering Ceuta in Morocco. A third panel shows a representation of the Battle of  Arcos de Valdevez. Another panel shows the meeting of knight Egas Moniz and Alfonso VII of León in the12th century. Trains arrive here and depart to the major cities of the north of Portugal.

The São Bento Station is located at Praça Almeida Garret. The building opened in 1916 has still high on the walls a beautiful frieze multicolor evocative of the history of national roads since the beginning until the arrival of the first train to Braga. Jorge Colaço (Tangier, 1868 - Oeiras, 1942) was a Portuguese painter specially known for his works as tile (azulejo) painter. Jorge Colaço was born in Tangier, Morocco, the son of a Portuguese diplomat. He studied art in Lisbon, Madrid and Paris.

Even though Jorge Colaço was a canvas painter and caricaturist, he specialised in designing and painting azulejo panels to decorate large surfaces. His designs had a late Romantic taste, celebrating the achievements of Portuguese history. Along with historical themes, he also produced ethnographic and landscape scenes.

Among his most important works are tile panels in the Palace Hotel of Bussaco (1907); São Bento Railway Station in Porto (1905–1916); Sports Pavilion of Eduardo VII Park in Lisbon (1922); façade of the Church of Saint Ildefonso in Porto (1932) and many others. He also has works in Brazil, England (Windsor Castle), Geneva (Centre William Rappard) and other countries

In other panels we found country scenes and ethnography as exemplified by the procession of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios in Lamego, the pilgrimage of S. Torcato, in Guimarães, a harvest, the transport of wine on a boat in Douro.
