we have to learn before we can help Tips for Responsible Travel
voluntourism looks only one way
service learning is a popular term
but we need a solution revolution
we shouldn’t promote serving first…
.
we shouldn’t promote serving first…
and learning second
learning from our mistakes is always
good
what about starting by avoiding mistakes?
learning service = trips where you are learning to serve AFTER you leave
PEPY Tours is designed to inspire people to improve the way they
GIVE, TRAVEL & LIVE
PEPY Tours is designed to inspire people to improve the way they
GIVE, TRAVEL & LIVE after they leave us
and, with a two-part fee, the donation requirement from the tour goes straight to our NGO programs
which are investing in skills and capacity-building of local leaders who are looking to improve their communities
3 Steps to Add Value to Your Travels
Research 1 #
Invest in people

Follow-up & ask questions
3 #
Follow-up & ask questions
What are the recent successes AND failures? What have you learned? How have you impacted attitudes & actions?
You can’t know your actual impact unless you follow up, do research, and stay open to learning the realities of the impact you had.
note
3 TIPS
Before you donate your time & money, vet the NGO
1. Ask about failures & change
2. Ask others & be willing to listen (we WILL make mistakes, be open to accepting that!)
3. Ask the organization about attitudes, actions & people
3. Ask the organization about attitudes, actions & people
Not just things & finances
And, remember, it’s all about IMPACTS, not inputs
RESEARCH: Giving your money
3 TIPS
Giving your money away
RESEARCH: Giving your money $ 1. You vote with
your money
Do you want more kids on the street?
Poverty voyeurism is voting for poverty.
RESEARCH: Giving your money
2. Ask. Vet. Follow up.
RESEARCH: Giving your money
3. Fund sustainable projects that build capacity.
RESEARCH: Giving your money
At we have made many mistakes.
RESEARCH: Giving your money
At we have made many mistakes.
We started our work in Cambodia by building schools, & we realized…
Schools don’t teach kids.
Neither do pens, books, or t-shirts.
We learned we needed to invest in people to put those things to use.
3 REASONS
Just Say NO to Orphanage Tourism
http://vimeo.com/21790809
1. Orphanages are not a tourist attraction.
2. It’s not a zoo. No, you can’t pet or feed them.
3. Ask yourself: Would this be okay if this was happening in my community?
3 TIPS
Traveling the World
1. Know where your
money is going.
2. Strive for your yellow
zone.
3. Avoid the long-neck-
women phenomenon.
A FEW MORE
Things to Keep in Mind
It’s not just about the “10 days of service”…
It’s about the 355 other days.
It’s not just about the “10 days of service”…
It’s not just about where you “give” your money…
It’s not just about where you “give” your money… It’s about where you spend it.
Be INTERESTED. Be EMPOWERED. Then, find the issue that you are passionate about…
Get ANGRY Get INTERESTED
Get EMPOWERED
Thank you!
