San Juan Bautista (St. John the Baptist) is the Patron Saint of Puerto Rico. Also the Cathedral was named after him. It was also the original name given to Puerto Rico by Columbus. Alonso Manso is the first Christian Bishop to come to the Americas in 1512. His remains rest in the San Juan Bautista Cathedral. The fortified city of Old San Juan contains one of the major concentration of temples per square miles worldwide. Some of them are UNESCO World Heritages. The Church provided the first expressions of art, architecture, culture, education, and faith in Puerto Rico. Old San Juan celebrates the world’s longest Christmas season. For almost five centuries, Old San Juan has been a pilgrimage destination. The San Juan Bautista Cathedral houses the Altar of Our Lady of Providence which is the Patron Virgin of Puerto Rico, and also where the Patriotic Altar, and the remains of Juan Ponce de León (Conqueror of Florida rests). Many holy persons that brought Christianity to the Americas, first evangelized in Old San Juan. One of the first ordained priest in America happened in Old San Juan. Throughout the Route you can discover Sacred Relics, such as a small piece of the Holy Cross of Christ, a relic of St. John the Baptist, and saint relics. Calle del Cristo (Street of the Christ) is one of the first paved street in the New World. San José is the second oldest church of the Americas, and it is the best gothic representation . The oldest cemetery Santa Maria de Pazzis is located in Old San Juan. Sebastian Street Festival is the most famous festival in Puerto Rico. It is celebrated in Old San Juan, and was initiated by the Church in the 1940’s. The painting of the Virgin Mary of Bethlehem, located in Old San Juan since 16th Century is one of the first miraculous art pieces recognized by the Church in the Americas. The Virgin of the Sailing Man Chapel, located at the Fort San Felipe del Morro Castle, a UNESCO Patrimony, is the oldest chapel in the US Fort System.
