CAMPUS BEATS

Neon is one of the biggest cultural fests in town. This year, it took place over a course of 6 days. It has been a tradition where it begins an A-list concert and this year was no different with the international artist Jay Sean of 'Ride It' fame performing on live on campus. Neon is a platform for the talented to express themselves through their respective art forms. There are many competitions such as solo and duet singing, solo and group dancing, fashion show, Mr & Ms Sinhgad and Aegis of Rock. SCOE participated in all of the above mentioned events, proving that, we engineers are indeed multi-faceted and full of surprises! Some of the performances, like the duet singing by Samiran Mudgalkar and Amit Joshi, blew away the judges and the audience and they went on to win the duet singing competition. Important issues like untouchability and common man's frustration in our country were addressed in a street play called 'Mala Bharat Vikaicha Aahe'. And after SCOA's 8 year long winning streak, SCOE took first place with their 'Sugar Rush' themed fashion show. Sayali Gujrathi surprised everyone with her one minute Bharatnatiyam performance, a seemingly impossible feat, in her talent round for Ms.Sinhgad. While Chakradhar Reddy came in third with his public speaking in Mr.Sinhgad. With all these wins, SCOE, for the second year in a row, took home the overall Sinhgad Karandak trophy for cultural events . All in all, it was a marvelous and magical year for the students of SCOE.

-Nishita Lali

January at Sinhgad Institutes is an amazing time of the year. High on adrenaline and with a fire in the belly, sports is something that we, at SCOE, take rather seriously. 2015 was even more special. SCOE won the Sports Karandak bagging the highest points tally so far, a whopping 18. Girls Cricket, Boys Volleyball, Chess Boys, Boys and Girls Relay and Lawn Tennis Boys grabbed the first place with two points each and made all of us proud. Not far behind were the Girls Throwball, Boys Football, Boys Swimming, Girls Lawn tennis and 100 Meters Running Boys teams who earned a point each for taking the runner-up position. The resulting point tally was miles ahead with a gap of 10 points between SCOE and RMD.The chant of “SCOE SCOE” from the crowd kept the spirits high and boosted the morale of the participants throughout the Karandak. Sneaking out of lectures to cheer friends on field was a pleasure that every student indulged in. A cherry on top was the prize distribution ceremony at the hands of Bollywood heart-throb Arjun Kapoor.

The department of Electronics and Telecommunication of Sinhgad college of Engineering in collaboration with the IEEE committee this year, hosted an international conference on 'Pervasive Computing'. Generating a lot of buzz, the conference commenced on the 8th of January and the enthusiasm was visibly seen amongst the staff and students. There were four tutorial speakers. Each of them presented their outlooks on the current trends in the field of computing and technology. "Technology will be developed only when machines work for humans without us realising it", said one of the speakers. Another perspective presented was that of the Google glass. Various frames of reference were analysed, taking into consideration on where we are heading today in the field of technology. Post graduation students from all over India came over to present their research ideas in categorized fields such as VLSI, Embedded systems, Signal Processing and many more. The conference concluded on the 10th of January and was a grand success.

Tea- Beverage and Beyond

The grey misty air and the green earth allured the eyes, its scent filled the lungs and tranquilized the soul. Cane hairbands grew into cane hoods, twice the petite women wearing them. Their soulful hymns and harvest songs echoed in the cascading valleys. Every leaf they plucked was a hue of green so fresh, I had never seen. The aroma so sprightly, I craved to take in more. It had a therapeutic effect. I watched yaks pass by as the chanting from a monastery and the tinkling of their bells soothed the ears. I stood riveted for what seemed like an eternity, dumbfounded, in the tea gardens of Darjeeling.I was waiting for tea at a little cottage garden here. Darjeeling tea in yak milk. Heaven, I thought. In its many forms, tea is unique. There's dusk, there's evening, and there's midnight; there's dawn, there's a morning, there's afternoon, and there's tea-time. While it's coffee doing most of the asking out and bonding, sharing and chatting, tea is solemnly introspecting, awakening. Iced tea, green tea, espresso tea, herbal tea were perhaps a natural consequence of popularization of urban coffee. Tea is classic, hence black and white are the best hues that it can take.Whether prepared in styles such as Iranian, classic Moroccan, Pure Chinese or English, taken with goat milk, cow milk, buffalo milk, yak milk, camel milk or no milk at all, relished with biscuits, maska bun or cream rolls the astringent caffeine works wonders just when needed… 4 pm!

Fusion Food

Fusion food is a combination of ingredients from drastically different cuisines, mainly resulting from globalization. One may eat fusion food, without even realizing it. Italian calzones are happily filled with the Indian pav bhaji; Chinese flavors are introduced in food items like Spanish puffs, burgers and dosas, creating Schezwan variations. There are Ramen noodle burgers and Pizza burgers being sold at fast food joints. Even Maggi sandwiches are a common sight nowadays.Foods of distinct characteristics are mixed together. The chocolate dosa is a mixture of dosa and cocoa powder with ice cream rolled in it, seasoned with nuts and topped with chocolate sauce or maple syrup. An example of a bizarre mix is fried coke. The coke is frozen and then fried .Gulab jamuns find their way into cheesecakes, and barfi parathas have also started coming up. Let's not forget the latest addition to pizza, biryani, giving us the Brizza! Dissidents of fusion cuisine call it “confusion” cuisine. Often chefs combine ingredients that have no business being together. Even though sometimes the result might turn into a gastronomic nightmare, however, on the whole, innovation is the new way forward. When thinking about fusion food, 'think globally, dine globally', might as well be the new maxim, the secret ingredient for international peace. The possibilities for transformation are even more mouthwatering.

I recently had the chance to visit the quirky capital city of Japan- Tokyo. Tokyo isn't a city by itself, but an agglomeration of many smaller sub-cities. This means that every sub-city or 'ku' you go to, there will be different things to see and experience, while the wackiness and overall friendliness are common to all of them. There is so much to see in Tokyo, even for the unadventurous traveller, that no matter how long you stay, you will never be sure whether you got it all done. There are the traditional tourist spots as well as the off-beat places only brave people venture to. An important thing in Tokyo that you should never miss is the food. Haughty Parisians and opinionated New Yorkers might scoff, but Tokyo is the best city in the world when it comes to food. The city's restaurants have been awarded a total of 375 Michelin stars, more than any other city in the world. Considering that there are more than 160,000 known eateries, whatever your tastes, Tokyo has got the means to satisfy them. One thing about Tokyo stands out, and that's the weirdness of the place. Here you can find whole streets dedicated to manga and anime, maid cafes, three seat bars (there's place for only two customers and the bartender), cat cafes, robot cabaret, auctions at the world's biggest fish market, capsule hotels. The list is inexhaustible. Even before the gleaming skyscrapers have impressed you and the culinary allures have seduced you, the first thing you will realize is that this city is home to some of the most polite and respectful people in the world. It is a part of their harmony-loving culture to never be rude to anyone and under no circumstances will you ever be spoken to or treated badly in Tokyo. Despite the massive hordes of people in the trains and on the platforms, you will certainly never be robbed, and anything that gets lost, will always be found again. It's no wonder that Tokyo has consistently been rated the safest city in the world. So, my verdict? Tokyo is definitely one of the finest places I've been to. If you have a chance, go. Don't miss it for the world. Literally.

WORLD'S WEIRDEST RESTAURANTSDinner in the Sky - Montreal, Canada

It's a bird! It's a plane! Nah, it's a dinner party in the air! Well, if you have an appetite for high altitude then this is just the place for you. Originating in Belgium, the concept involves a crane hoisting guests, who are securely strapped into “dining chairs” 160 feet up in the air, along with a table, wait staff, and everything that's required to enjoy a meal floating above the ground. The novelty-based mobile restaurant has gained popularity worldwide and is now offered for limited run periods in cities around the globe, including Montreal.

Ithaa Undersea Restaurant - Rangali Island, Maldives

Located at the Conrad Maldives, Rangali Island Resort is a gorgeous and intimate underwater restaurant that is more than sixteen feet below sea level. Opened in 2005, the all-glass restaurant has a menu consisting of fresh seafood, beef rib eye, veal, and other gourmet dishes. Encased in a transparent acrylic roof, the restaurant offers its diners a 270-degree panoramic view of sea creatures swimming in the Maldives' crystal clear waters.

Modern Toilet - Taipei City, Taiwan Province, People's Republic of China

The idea for this odd restaurant was conceived by one of the owners while he was reading while sitting—where else?—on a toilet. Initially it only sold chocolate ice cream in containers shaped like a squat toilet, but once the humorous spin became a great success, a full-fledged, bathroom-themed eatery emerged. Today, Modern Toilet is a chain with locations across Asia and it has plans for further expansion.

O.NOIR - Toronto, CanadaO.NOIR's philosophy is that a diner's enjoyment is amplified when his sight is eliminated as the other senses become heightened. Flashlights, cellphones, and luminous watches are prohibited from the dark dining establishment. The evening starts in a lit bar where guests place their orders; then they are led by a server into an unlit dining room, where a two-hour seated dinner service begins with servers explaining where everything is placed on the table. This novel experience certainly puts a new spin on the term “blind date.”

Fortezza Medicea Restaurant -- Volterra, Italy

At this behind-the-bars eatery, you'll be served your one square a day by actual inmates; and you'll eat said meal, fittingly, with plastic cutlery.

Ninja New York - New York City, USADesigned to look like a 15th-century Japanese feudal village full of dark nooks and snaking passageways, you'll dine amongst stealthy warriors—the waiters—who roam, romp, and perform tricks, all the while serving sushi and sake. Just call it Japanese fare mixed with martial arts flair at its best. -Vaishnavi Tatpal

Virtual Reality (VR)The term 'Virtual Reality' was coined decades ago by the French poet Antonin Artaud. In his seminal book 'The Theatre and Its Double', he described theatre as 'la realite virtuelle'.VR is just like being transported to a new artificial world that is cut off from the real world. Hypothetically, one can't tell the difference b/w real and virtual world. It's just the idea of a parallel digital world allowing one to communicate and do things in a virtual world.

Augmented reality (AR) Has anybody heard about Google glass? Want to know how it works? It is based on Augmented Reality which works in a totally opposite manner. It brings virtual world into the real and the user can tell the difference b/w the both. User can interact with the environment knowing that it is artificial!Trending these days:VR like Oculus rift is becoming successful in the gaming industry.Magic Leap, a startup has received more than half a billion dollars in an investment from Google. They are working on AR and computer vision and are expected to deliver the new version of Google Glass by the end of this year.

Frozen LuminescenceCreating lighter versions of our favorite snacks and drinks may be a mode towards better food; but some partygoers seem to have taken the trend rather literally!Dhairya Dand has come up with self aware, glowing ice cubes that surprisingly beat to the ambient music. The electronics inside the ice cubes also understand how fast and how much you're drinking and change their color from green to orange and finally to red as you keep drinking beyond the safety limit. If things get out of control, the cubes send a text to your close friend through your smartphone. If this wasn't enough, a team at Cornetto with an aim to make a cinema based ice cream that you can eat in the dark without getting yourself dirty, went on to create ice creams which glow in the absence of light. Though the fluorescent pudding may seem anything but natural, the team insists that it's a completely wholesome process; sort of saying, “It is totally organic and natural, if you're okay with genetically modified organisms.” What started as a simple electric bulb in the hands of Thomas Alva Edision has turned into glowing ice creams and ice cubes in ours. Now you never know what could light up!
