Overview -

Jaipur is the capital city of Rajasthan state of India. It wasestablished in 1727 on 18 November by Amber’s ruler, MaharajaSawai Jai Singh II and bears the name of its founder. Among pre-modern towns of India, Jaipur is uncommon in the regular streetsas well as division of city into 6 sectors on the basis of 34 m wide,broad streets. Gridded streets further divide the urban dwellings.The West, East and South sides of a central palace complex arewrapped around by five quarters and there is also a sixth quarterto the East.

The Central quarter encloses the Hawa Mahal palace, small lakeand formal gardens. In the North Western corner of the old city isthe Nahargarh fort, the dwelling of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh-2.Also present in the city is the Jantar Mantar, an observatory whichis a world heritage site. Jaipur is also included in the GoldenTriangle tourist circuit which includes Agra and Delhi.

Jaipur is connected by railways from all important cities in thecountry and is one of the cheapest options. Daily connections toJaipur Railway station are available to Delhi, cities of Rajasthan,Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. Delhi is wellconnected to Jaipur by the Shatabdi Express.

• City Palace: An example of both Rajput and Mughalarchitecture, it is a vast complex that stretches over 1/7 of thecity. It is divided into sprawling gardens, a collection of courtyardsand palatial buildings like Chandra Mahal and Mubarak Mahal.
