Field AI Delivery System

to Enhance Dairy & Beef

Production in

SNNPRS

Opportunity/Potential

•Huge cattle Population CSA :- total population 10,543,129 /21% from the national/ out of these 4,358,111 are cow & heifer /with the age of 3 – 10 year/

•Liquid nitrogen producing plants in the region, /two/•Around 300 trained AI technicians,• In some areas relatively better awareness of the farmers to accept the AI service /but not in all cases/

•Relatively better animal health service facility, /One Animal health expert to three PA`s in most cases/

•High demand for animal products,/Nationally & Internationally/

(due to Economical growth & related cases)

•Current policies & strategies seeking for the overall development of the sector,/Organization structure/

•Most of the areas are suitable to implement AI activity/Including some pastoralist areas/

What we Achieve to date with these Potential;

Semen distributed Dose 59445 99 77765 129.6

The achievements were so minimal as compared to the potential in the Region, there are some bottlenecks for this;

Main Bottleneck`s•Lack of appropriate input provision strategy, /specially liquid nitrogen & semen/

•Frequent transfer of AI technicians to seek better alternatives, ( 300 trained but 159 are available on job)

•No constant supply of insemination equipment,•Low conception rate of the inseminated cow/heifer, ( conception rate is averagely around 3)

•Absent of incentives for the Inseminators

•Low Performance of AI technicians, One technician inseminate on average 170 – 210 cow per year which is very low

• Absence of logistic to facilitate field AI service mostly the service was delivered at stationed level, /lack of motorcycle/

•Lack of refreshment training to AI technicians, /specially for the last 3 Years/

•Less attention was given to animal feed,

• Less focus on appropriate & timely data collection,• Technical gap to select the appropriate breed (Mostly focus on HF)•Marketing related problems,•Lack of coordination among experts, livestock production , AI technicians, Animal

health experts, Development Agents, Input providers, ….

•Technicians were assigned to perform out of their responsibility,/on other activities/

2004 E.c. PlanActivities Unit Plan

Total Insemination No 135,000

Calves from insemination No 65,742

Distribution of liquid nitrogen Li 40000

Distribution of semen Dose 145000

Service per conception no 2 & 1.75

Strategies to Achieve the plan

•Timely & properly distribution of input /liquid nitrogen & semen …/, to facilitate this :- purchase of two truck with necessary equipments, designing of two appropriate distribution roots & monthly distribution of input takes among the producer & the AI technician at regular bases

•Provision of motorbike, two motorbike to each woreda /totally 230 motorbike/, so the service transform to rotational bases, This improve the performance of Experts & the service will be delivered at a minimum distance /that was an advantageous for the farmers/

•Training of 80 additional AI technician`s•Refreshment training• Facilitating AI technician training center•Improving the reporting mechanism /training, integrating the input distribution with report collection/

Thank You!!
