RMUG 2014 Presentation Kent Brooks From Data to Insight

Preview:

DESCRIPTION

During an 18 month ERP upgrade Casper College began a journey to learn how to effectively deploy Business Intelligence. As we began to more fully understand the scope of our project as well as the enormity of this new and growing field we began asking how we could more effectively utilize business analytics for our entire data set. We will cover the types of tools, costs and how you can begin your journey to learn about this amazing field. We will also touch on the almost untouched topic of analtyical ethics. This session will help you move from being knowledge free to a tenderfoot in the expanding field of Business Intelligence in education.

eThe Experience

The Data Challenge (Part 1) We have Web Intelligence but are

lacking the ability to create reports from our whole data set.

SAP( for example) = good daily reports but no ad hoc, no visualization no dashboards

The Data Challenge (Part 2) We are being asked to be wise

stewards of state resources about a field that is brand new

The skills we are being asked to learn to do this right are in addition to all the other things we must know

Observations for the BI Tenderfoot

We are decent at collecting data but not at turning data into useful and timely information

eThe Experience

Observations for the BI Tenderfoot Not one tool does everything Even if you say you have a Data

Warehouse you can only say you're doing Business Intelligence if you have tools to change data into useful information.

eThe Experience

Observations for the BI Tenderfoot We need collect more data more

rapidly and turn it into information There is never enough resources

allocated to education The perfect is the enemy of the good People matter more than technology

eThe Experience

Observations for the BI Tenderfoot Premise options give more options and

capabilities for customization than cloud options

This is all brand new, you need a data scientist but they are not common….yet

The only KPI that matters is user adoption

Other Observations: 100% BI utilization should be goal Immediate need is still real-time Ad Hoc

Reporting and analysis Ethics in Analytics is virtually ignored Whatever you do should be Data Source
