But It’s My Home‽Designing Connected Products

I - Electricity

My first job at Uni

“Sure. Let me tell you all about electricity.”

“I have no idea how much I use…”

About at the same time…

“Prosumer?”

Not exactly what the consultants meant…

“The Read-Write Web”— Tim O’Reilly

“The Read-Write Grid”— Tom Raftery

What happens if we think electricity with web principles?

“But how do I find out how much I use?”

We thought this is the Golden Age…

“1 in 5 people don’t know what kWh (kilowatt hour) stands for—some thought it was a make of Japanese car, a type of heavy goods vehicle or even a boy band.”

— E.On UK survey

“Most consumers interact with their [energy] provider an average of just nine minutes per year. These interactions are generally neutral or negative—typically pertaining to billing, credit or supply issues.”

— Daniel Yates, OPower

II - What Network?

1.5 GFLOPS

1.5 GFLOPS

“The WWW project was started to allow high energy physicists to share data, news, and documentation.”

In short, to create a better document access system.

Anything, really…

home.”

“I sort of regard the network as being like the next generation of electricity: it will end up hitting all products sooner or later. But we won’t really think about them as being “networked products,” in the way we don’t think about things as ‘electrical products.‘”

— Matt Webb, BERG

III - Forget Platforms

(this is me, starting to rant)

“We'd like to think of your entire home as an accessory, or better yet as a network of accessories, and think of Android as the operating system for your home.”

”Users could manage their deployment.”

Everybody is building platforms, in the expectation that once they’re there, developers and designers will build for it.

A platform is only that if it is used.

IV - So?

interesting until they get technologically boring.”
