Indie. Grunge. Riot Grrrls. Cuties.
By: Julia Fenn & Evelyne Gichingiri Street Style Presentation
The Indie 411
• Named “Indie” because of their allegiance to bands on obscure, independent record labels
• Their style is defined by ‘dressing down’
• Indie style consists mostly of over or under sized items bought second hand, in yard sales, thrifted, or purchased from charity shops
• Graphically distinctive tee’s that display interest in an obscure indie band
• Girls usually wear distressed denim paired with stripy leggings
• Army surplus wears thrown with patent Doc Marten’s
• Love of Checkered shirts defines the style
• Indie can be defined as an obscure
form of rock learned about by
someone more hip than yourself
(Thanks, Urbandictionary.com!)
• Universal acceptance of the name
“Indie” due to the loyalty and
allegiance to bands on obscure,
unheard of, independent record
labels
• Influenced by bands such as The
Smith’s, Joy Division, New Order,
Ride, Happy Mondays, and My
Bloody Valentine

Indie History • As popular British bands grew
in the US the Indie Kid’s
appearance style also became
influential – West Coast
especially
• Indie style is heavily drawn
from retro styles – mostly
punk, grunge, mod, and hippie
street styles
• Rejected societal constructs
like consumerism
• Grunge grew out of Indie in the
late 80’s with a new range of bands based out of Seattle
• In the 2000’s Indie styles re-
emerged with a vengeance
thanks a blossoming new indie-
rock scene in the US
• Originally disassociating
themselves with any single sub
culture backfired as it turned
into it’s very own.
Grunge 411. • The dressing down extremist
• Geographically and culturally defined – Seattle was the birthplace of true grunge and the grunge music scene
• Fusion of punk and leftover “hippie” aesthetics to create it’s own unkempt look
• Ultimate blend of left over hippie, Americanized punk, & Indie kid
• Defined by music, like Indie
• Influenced by bands such as Nirvana and the Smashing Pumpkins

Riot Grrrls!
• Sassy, articulate women who
created an articulate post
feminist sub culture
• Revolutionized the first
predominantly female style-
tribe in the entire history of
street style
• Evolved into the fem-wave
from the grunge-wave
• Influenced heavily by bands
like Bikini Kill, Hole, BratMobile,
No Doubt and Cold Cold Hearts
Fem-Wave Riot Grrrl Trends
Cuties
• Wore kid’s tee shirts
• Color palette was full of pastel
colors
• Fun and playful with an
underlying sense of deep
gloom and doom
• Coincides with the melancholy
of Indie culture and music
• Variant of Indie that surfaced
in the late 80’s
• Relied heavily on 2nd hand
clothes that focused on
asexual clothing from a pre
pubescent age in soft pastel
colors

Vintage Roots
• Indie, Riot Grrrls, Grunge, and
Cuties all rely heavily on
vintage fashion and iconic
looks from the past.
• Retro styles come into play,
and the rejection of
consumerism leads to the
revival of old and forgotten
styles
• Indie would not exist without
the reference to past styles

Seattle ’83 sporting a looking commonly
referred to as “goodwill fashion”. This type
of look is relevant, recyclable, and
channeled still today.
