ELECTRONICAUTOMATICGEARBOX(SPORTRONIC)(optional for versions/markets where
applicable)
The Sportronic is an automatic gearboxwith four speeds plus reverse (3.0 V624V version) and five speeds plus reverse(JTD 20V Multijet version) with self-adapting control (i.e. capable of adaptingto the driver's driving style), which trans-mits power continuously and with veryfast electrohydraulic gear engagementtimes.
STARTING THE ENGINE
The engine can be started only with thegearshift lever in the P or N position.
For safety reasons, it is advisable to startthe engine with the brake pedal pressed.
IMPORTANT When moving off, afterstarting the engine, do not press the ac-celerator pedal before and during themovement of the gearshift lever. This isparticularly important when the engine iscold.
Do not attempt to ob-tain peak performanceunti l the engine has
reached normal operating tem-perature.
MOVING OFF
After starting the engine, with the en-gine idling and keeping the brake pedalpressed, move the gearshift lever to posi-tion D. Release the brake pedal and grad-ually press the accelerator pedal.
IMPORTANT Movement of the leverfrom position P is allowed only with theignition key atMAR and the button onthe lever and the brake pedal pressed.
The 3.0 V6 24V version features an au-tomatic winter driving programme (de-scribed in the following pages), whereasthe JTD 20V Multijet version features a
specific function enabling to engage at s-tandstill up to the 3rd gear (in sequentialmode) to guarantee pickup even underextreme grip conditions, in addition toASR assistance.

STOPPING THE CAR
To stop the car simply press the brakepedal regardless of the position of thegearshift lever.
IMPORTANT The key may be re-
moved only with the gear shift lever inposition P and within a max. time of 25seconds from the engine switch off. If thelever is not in position P, when openingthe door a buzzer will advise the driverfor approx. 15 seconds.
In the case of an emergency (faults, flatbattery, etc.) the ignition key can be re-moved from the switch pulling the knob
(A-fig. 103) under the ignition switch.
SELECTINGAUTOMATIC/SEQUENTIALMANUAL OPERATION
The main feature of this gearbox is thepossibility of being used in the automatic orsequential manual mode. The operating
mode is chosen positioning the gearshiftlever (fig. 104) in the right sector (A)(automatic gearshifting) or left sector (B)(sequential manual gearshifting). The gear-box operating mode and the gear engagedare shown on the display (A-fig. 105):

P - Park
To prevent accidental movements, thelever can only be moved to position Pwith the button (C-fig. 104) pressed.
When the car is parked, always set thelever to this position. A device in the gear-
box locks the driving wheels.
AUTOMATIC OPERATION
For automatic operation move the leverin the right sector (A-fig. 105) withfour positions:
P - park
R - reverseN - neutral
D - forward gear.

In case of emergency (low battery), it ispossible to move the lever from positionP, pressing on the lever lock device (B-fig. 107) through the plugged hole (A-fig. 106).
You are advised to have this operationcarried out by Authorised Alfa Romeo Ser-vices.
R - Reverse
Move the gearshift lever to R with thevehicle stationary, the engine idling andthe brake pedal pressed.
To prevent accidental movements, thelever can only be moved to this position
with the button (C-fig. 104) pressed.With the lever in position R the revers-
ing lights turn on and a buzzer will soundfor about 5 seconds.
IMPORTANT With the lever in posi-tion R, reverse gear is not engaged if thevehicle speed exceeds the establishedlimit. When the speed falls below this val-
ue, reverse gear engages and stays en-gaged even if the limit is exceeded.
N - Neutral
This is the neutral position to be used ifthe car is to be pushed or towed.
With the gearshift lever in this position,keep the car braked pressing the brakepedal.
Move the gearshift lever to position Pwith the car stationary and the engineidling before switching off.
For safety reasons the ignition key canonly be removed with the gearshift leverin this position.

D - Forward gear
This is the position to be used when dri-ving forward normally. The electronic con-trol unit controls automatic engagementof the gears depending on the position ofthe accelerator, driving speed, engine
rpm, longitudinal and transversal acceler-ation and the type of road.
The electronic gearbox can choose be-tween different operating programmes,which range between comfortable econo-my driving and sporty driving coming intooperation between the lowest and thehighest speeds.
Kickdown
To obtain optimum acceleration, for ex-ample when overtaking, the gearbox willkickdown by one or two gears simply byquickly pressing fully home the accelera-tor pedal.
Engagement of the next longer ratio willtake place when the maximum rpm limitis reached.
Engagement of automatic sportyprogramme(only 3.0 V6 24V version)
When wanting to drive in a sporty man-ner exploiting automatic gearbox opera-
tion, simply move the lever to the leftsector from position D, without moving iton the (+) and () positions. In fact,with the lever in this position the sportiestautomatic programme is engaged.
The sporty programme will remain en-gaged until the gearshift lever is moved.
Moving the lever to the right sector re-
engages automatic operation with the dif-ferent operating programmes, while push-ing it forwards or backwards on the (+)or () positions sequential manual opera-tion is selected.
The electronic control unit can acknowl-edge special circumstances, such as run-ning along a bend, by means of the in-stant front wheel revolution speeds differ-ence between given by the ABS activesensors, preventing shifting to a hightergear before engine rpm limit is attained.
Only with this condition at the end of thebend will the gearbox engage the longerratio. This strategy makes it possible toimprove the balance of the car and assureprompt acceleration at the end of thebend, because the ideal gear has alreadybeen engaged.
In the same way, during braking, lowergears are engaged to better exploit the
braking action of the engine.
With the engine idlingand the gearshift lever is
in position N, the car tends to movealso on a level surface: keep thebrake pedal pressed when the
lever is in position N.
WARNING
With the engine at idlespeed and the lever in po-
sition D the car tends to move alsoon a level surface: keep the brakepedal pressed until moving off.

Moving the lever back to position D thegearbox instantly resumes the automaticmode selecting the ratio according to thedriving characteristics.
IMPORTANT The electronic control u-nit is programmed to change gear one ata time, therefore repeated fast actuationwill not result in repeated engagementsof the gears. The higher or lower gear isengaged moving the lever to the (+) or() position when the previous requesthas been performed.
In the event of fault to the sequentialmanual gearshift system (SPORT) thesystem will select the automatic modeand the display on the instrument clusterwill show AUTO.
FAULT SIGNALLING
Automatic gearbox faults are indicatedby the warning light (B-fig. 105) onthe instrument cluster as follows:
warning light glowing steadily = auto-matic gearbox oil maximum temperature
warning light flashing = automaticgearbox fault.
Turning the ignition key to MAR thewarning light should turn on and go outafter about 4 seconds. If the warninglight stays on or if it turns on when travel-ling, this indicates a gearbox fault (flash-ing light) or gearbox oil overheating
(steadily glowing light).
Warning light glowing steadily
If the warning light turns on and glowssteadily when travelling, this indicatesthat the gearbox oil has reached the max-imum temperature.
You are therefore advised to stop the
car with the engine at id le speed(gearshift lever atP) until the warninglight goes out and then resume your jour-ney without pushing the engine to peakperformance.
SEQUENTIAL MANUALOPERATION
For the sequential manual mode, movethe lever to the left sector (B-fig. 104)with 2 positions, as shown by the sym-bols on the lever mask:
(+) = engagement of the higher ratio
() = engagement of the lower ratio.
Moving the gearshift lever to the manu-al sector is only possible from position D:The ratio selected by the automatic gear-box when the lever is moved will remainengaged.
When the sequential manual mode is
selected, the word SPORT (A-fig.105) and the gear engaged light upon the display on the ins trument cluster.
To select the higher ratio move the leverin the (+) direction and to shift downmove the lever to ().
When the sequentialmanual mode has been
set and a high gear is engaged, toaccelerate rapidly, for example toovertake, it is necessary to down-
shift by hand: the kickdown fea-ture cannot be engaged!

If the warning light turns on again, it isnecessary to stop again with the engineidling until it goes out.
If there are less than 15 minutes betweenone turning on of the warning light and thenext, you are advised to stop the car,
switch off the engine and allow the engine-gearbox unit to cool down completely.
Warning light flashing
If the warning light flashes when the en-gine is started, this indicates a fault in theautomatic gearbox.
The automatic control system sets anemergency programme engaging 3rdor 4th gear (depending on the speed atwhich the fault occurred).
Turning the engine on and off again, thesystem self-diagnostic feature may ex-clude the fault and then turn off thewarning light. The fault remains in thememory and it is therefore advisable tohave the automatic gearbox checked byAlfa Romeo Authorized Services.
PUSH STARTS
Starting by pushing or towing the car isnot possible. In the event of an emer-gency, when the battery is flat, start thecar with a suitable emergency battery, fol-
lowing the instructions given in the chap-ter In an emergency.
TOWING THE CAR
WARNING For towing the car complywith current local regulations. Also followthe instructions given in the chapter Inan emergency.
If the car needs to be towed adhere to
the following recommendations: if possible, carry the vehicle on the
floor of a rescue vehicle;
if this is not possible, tow the car rais-ing the driving wheels (front) from theground;
if this, too, is not possible, the carshould not be towed for more than 50km at a speed of no more than 50
km/h.When towing, the gearshift lever should
be atN.
Do not start the enginewhile the car is beingtowed.
The failure to complywith these instructionsmay cause serious dam-
age to the automatic gearbox.
When travelling with thegearbox faulty, drive
with the utmost care in consider-ation of the limited performance (interms of acceleration and speed)
that the car can offer.
WARNING
When travelling with thegearbox faulty, the re-
versing gear lock might not be ac-tive: absolutely never move thelever to the R position with the caron the move.

CONSTRUCTIONAL FEATURES
The Sportronic gearbox is fully automat-ic with electrohydraulic control and fourforward gears plus reverse (3.0 V6 24Vversion) and five forward gears plus re-verse (JTD 20V Multijet version).
It is controlled by an electronic controlunit which handles:
the torque distributor
gearshifting
specific programmes
The gearbox is coupled with a fluid pow-er torque distributor with piloted antislip
device which makes it possible to obtaindemultiplication ratios.
The particularity of this gearbox whichworks without idle gear enables:
higher compactness and weight re-duction
improved output due to less friction
lower stress of transmission parts
GENERAL FEATURES
Electronic gearbox management makesit possible to obtain gearshifting suited tomomentary engine characteristics with acertain elasticity.
The electronic control unit has the task
of: adapting the oil pressure for gearshift-
ing to the engine torque
activating safety functions
defining the manual gearshifting pro-gramme
system diagnostics.
For controlling these operating logics thecontrol unit uses the following signals:
engine rpm
throttle position
engine temperature
turbine rpm vehicle speed
gearbox oil temperature
gearshift selector lever position
accelerator pedal position (kickdown)
brake pedal position
In addition the control unit converseswith the electronic control units of the ABS,injection-ignition, VDC and Cruise Control.

Conditions of use analysedby the control unit
The control unit analyses each singlecondition of use of the car, discriminatingit on the basis of the signals receivedfrom the various sensors.
The conditions analysed are: starting (position/accelerator pedal
changing speed)
acceleration (accelerator pedal com-pletely pushing down speed)
full load (number of engine full loadkickdown signals or position maintenancetime)
braking (accelerator pedal releasetime and braking system operation)
type of programme (gearshift selectorlever position)
winter driving (driving wheel skid-ding/ABS sensors active)(only 3.0 V624V version)
driving with trailer or uphill (carspeed in relation to transmitted torque)
entering a bend (transversal accelera-tion detected by the difference in the dif-ference between the wheels of one sideand the other/ABS sensors active
downhill driving (acceleration of thecar in relation to the position of the accel-erator pedal)
driving in town or queues (accelera-tor pedal position and car speed)
gear required by the driver (gearshiftselector level position).
Management of gearshiftprogrammes
To optimise vehicle handling the elec-tronic control unit has the following mem-orised programmes:
automatic operation
manual operation
winter driving (only 3.0 V6 24V version)
protection against high temperatureof the gearbox oil.
Automatic programme
In relation to the car speed and torquetransmitted, the control unit detects the s-lope of the road surface and dependingon the sporty features chosen, it au-tonomously chooses the programme mostsuited to the situation.
Automatic sporty programme(only 3.0 V6 24V version)
This function makes it possible to drivesportively while exploiting automatic op-eration of the gearbox.
To engage this function set the lever tothe left sector in the central position,
without moving it to (+) or (): thesportiest programme will remain engageduntil the lever is moved.

Manual sequential programme
This function enables manual sequentialuse of the gearbox merely moving the se-lector lever to the left.
To avoid overevving or excessively lowengine rpm, the control unit inhibits re-
quests for gearshifting that would causesuch situations.
Winter driving programme(only 3.0 V6 24V version)
This programme engages automaticallyif a driving wheel skids and it changes tospecific gears. Starting is possible only in2nd gear.
Engine heating programme(only 3.0 V6 24V version)
This programme allows the engine toreach normal operating temperature inthe shortest time possible (depending onthe outside temperature) highering thegearshifting points in relation to enginetemperature.
The programme engages automaticallyafter starting, if the engine temperature isbelow 30C and it remains active up to34C.
High gearbox oil temperaturesafety programme
This is activated when the gearbox oilreaches high temperature.
To facilitate oil cooling, this programmeinhibits gearshifting, either up or down. Itis however possible to use the manualprogramme
INTERNAL FITTINGS
GLOVE BOX (fig. 108-109)
On the dashboard there is a key-lock-able glovebox with light. The lock can beopened/closed using the ignition key.
To open the glovebox pull lever (A).
The compartment is lit by a courtesylight (B) when it is open with the ignitionkey atMAR.

CIGAR LIGHTER(fig. 118)
Press knob (A) in to use the cigarlighter, with ignition key at ACC orMAR; after some seconds the knob willreturn automatically to its initial positionand the cigar lighter is ready to use.
Remove the tray to empty and clean theashtray.
FRONT ASHTRAY(fig. 119)
To open the protective lid (A) press inthe point shown by the arrow.
To empty the ashtray, pull out the tray,pressing towards the left on the open lid:the tray is released and it moves up auto-
matically. Re-insert the tray in the specialguides and pressing gently.
The ashtray is lit when the key is atMAR.
REAR ASHTRAYS (fig. 120)
There is an ashtray on each rear door.
To empty remove the ashtray pressingthe tab (A). When refitting, firstly insertthe lower part, press the tab, then pushthe upper part into place.

GRAB HANDLES (fig. 121)
Two grab handles are located at frontdoors.
Two grab handles (A) are locatedabove the rear doors fitted with a coathook (B).
SUN VISORS (fig. 122)
These can be adjusted at the front andside.
The rear side of each sun visor (A) isfitted with a small mirror with sliding cov-er.
FRONT ROOF LIGHT (fig. 123)
The roof light comprises two lights withthe corresponding control switch.
With the switches (A) and (B) in thecentral position (1), both lights graduallyturn on until reaching their maximum in-
tensity when a door is opened. The lightgo off gradually after about 8 secondsfrom where the last door is closed.
If a door is left open, the lights gradual-ly go out after about 3 minutes. To turnthem on again, open another door or shutand re-open the same one. The lights goout when the ignition key is turned toMAR (with the doors closed) or engag-
ing central door locking.
Moving switches (A) and (B) to theleft (position 0), the lights stay off (OFFposition).
Moving switch (A) and (B) to the right(position 2), the lights stay on.
With switches (A) and (B) the lights
are turned on individually.
WARNING Before leaving the car,make sure that both switches are in thecentral position.

For the installation ofthe cellular phone andconnection to the provi-
sion in the car, contact only Au-thorized Alfa Romeo Services;this will guarantee first-rate re-sults with no possibility of anyinconvenience that may compro-mise the safety of the vehicle.
This light makes it possible to use thecourtesy mirror under conditions with dimlight.
Switch the light on and off, with thestart key in MAR position, using switch(A).
REAR ROOF LIGHTS (fig. 125)
In correspondence with each rear doorthere is a light which turns on automati-cally when a door is opened.
They are timed and work in the sameway as described for the front roof light.
They can be turned on and off by hand
pressing the switch (A).
DOOR LIGHTS (fig. 126-127)
In the lower part of each door there is asill light.

Operation of these lights is coupled withthe front roof lamp.
TELEPHONE PROVISION
On request for versions/markets whereapplicable, the car may be fitted with aprovision for the installation of a cellulartelephone.
This provision comprises:
aerial on the roof;
speaker on the passenger door to-gether with the woofer speaker,
aerial/speaker and car electrical sup-ply cables.

Routinely check that the
side water drain holes(C-fig. 130) are clear.
SUNROOF(optional for versions/markets whereapplicable)
The sunroof can only be operated whenthe ignition key is in the MAR position.
When the sunroof is opened a smallspoiler (B-fig. 129) rises which divertsthe flow of air.
Do not open the sunroofwhen snow or ice areon the roof as this may
damage it.
SLIDINGFORWARDS/BACKWARDS(fig. 128-129-130)
Press part (1) of the button (A-fig. 128) to open the roof; press part(2) of the button to close it.
When the button is released the sunroofwill stop in that position.

Improper use of the sun-roof can be dangerous.
Before and while operating it al-ways make sure that the passen-gers are not exposed to the risk ofharm caused either directly by thesunroof in motion or by personalitems drawn or knocked by it.
WARNING
When leaving the vehiclethe ignition key should beremoved to avoid accidents in-volving the sunroof which could beinadvertently operated by any pas-sengers remaining in the vehicle.

REAR LIFTING
This can only be achieved when the sun-roof is completely closed. Press the front end(2) of the control button (A-fig. 128).
Press end (1) of the button (A-fig. 128) to return the sunroof to the
horizontal position (roof closed).
SLIDING WING
The sunroof is equipped with manual-oper-ated sliding wing preventing direct sun rays.To open the wing pull handle (A-fig.131).
When opening the sunroof, the wing is au-
tomatically pushed inside the roof panel.When closing the sunroof, the wing comesout partially in order to have access to thehandle for manual closing.
EMERGENCY OPERATION(fig. 132-133-134)
If the electrical control device does notwork the sunroof can be opened manual-ly as follows:
Apply leverage to the points indicated
by the arrows and remove the plate withswitch (A-fig. 132).

Using the special key (B-fig. 133)provided in the tool bag rotate bushing(C-fig. 133) of the motor to move thesunroof.
IMPORTANT When the operation hasbeen ended the key should be turned half
a turn in the opposite direction until aclick is heard before it is removed.
LUGGAGECOMPARTMENT
The boot lid can be opened from outsidethe vehicle and from inside the vehicle.
IMPORTANT If the boot is not prop-erly shut, the corresponding warning lighton the check panel will come on.
OPENING FROM OUTSIDE(fig. 135)
Turn the badge (A) in the directionshown by the arrow, insert the key (B)and turn it anticlockwise.
Opening is facilitated by a servocontrolwhich operates the lock.
OPENING FROM INSIDE(fig. 136)
To open from inside:
With the vehicle stationary, press but-ton (A) inside the glovebox.
Due to its position, this control cannotbe operated when the glovebox is key-locked.
REMOTE CONTROL OPENING(fig. 137)(optional for the versions/markets whereapplicable)
The luggage compartment may be re-
mote opened by pressing the push-button(A-fig. 137) on the key with metallicinsert (B), even when the electronicalarm is ON (where installed).

The gas springs are cali-brated to guaranteecorrect operation with
loading specified by the manufac-
turer. Arbitrary additions to theboot lid (spoiler etc.) may affectits operation and safety.
In this case the alarm disengages theboot control sensor, the system (with theexception of versions for certain markets)sounds two beeps and the direction indi-cators light up for about three seconds.
When the boot is closed again the con-trol function is restored, the system (with
the exception of versions for certain mar-kets) sounds two beeps and the directionindicators light up for about three seconds.
EMERGENCY OPENING
The luggage compartment lock is re-leased by a servocontrol when openingthe bonnet from inside or using the key.However, it is always possible to open
the luggage compartment, even in caseof insufficient battery power: just rotatethe key wider and simultaneously pressthe bonnet edge by the hand.
IMPORTANT Apply a moderate pres-sure only on the bonnet edge, immediate-ly above the lock.
LIFTING AND CLOSING
Lifting the boot lid is made easier by theaction of the gas springs (B-fig. 138).
When the boot is opened the light (C-fig. 138) will come on. This light willgo out again when the boot is closed.
In order to close, lower the bonnet bythe handle (A-fig. 139) on the liningand press next to the lock till it clicks intothe right position.
Leaving the boot open, the light goes outautomatically after a few minutes. To turn iton again, open the boot and close it again.

SECURING THE LOAD
The loads carried may be blocked withstraps hooked to the special rings in theboot corners (fig. 140). The rings alsoserve to secure the luggage retaining net(available on request c/o Alfa Romeo Au-thorized Services).
IMPORTANT Travelling at night witha load in the boot it is necessary to adjustthe height of the low beam headlights(see next paragraph Headlights in thischapter). For correct use of the aimingdevice, also make sure that the load doesnot exceed the values given in the sameparagraph.

The lever used to open the bonnet is lo-cated under the left end of the dash-board.

IMPORTANT Bonnet raising is aided
by two gas springs. Do not tamper withthese springs and always accompany thebonnet while raising it.
Raise the safety lever upwards (B-fig. 142).
Raise the bonnet.
To close:
Lower the bonnet to approx. 20 cm.from the engine bay, then let it drop. Trylifting it to make sure that it is shut com-pletely and not simply caught in the safe-ty position.
If the bonnet does not close properly donot push it down but open it again andrepeat the above procedure.
HEADLIGHTS
IMPORTANT On the inside surface ofthe headlight there could appear a slightcoat of fogging; this does not show a defect,since it is a natural occurrence due to low
temperature and to the degree of humidityin the air; it will soon disappear as soon asthe lights are turned on. The presence ofdrops inside the headlight shows water seep-age, refer to the Alfa Romeo Dealership.

GAS DISCHARGE HEADLIGHTS(optional for versions/markets whereapplicable)
Gas discharge headlights (xenon) workwith a voltaic arc, in an atmosphere satu-rated with pressurised xenon gas, insteadof the incandescent filament.
The lighting produced is remarkablyhigher than that of the conventional lightin both terms of the quality of the light(lighter) and of the amplitude and posi-tion of the lit area.
The advantages offered by better light-ing are noted (due to less sight fatigueand better orientation capability of the
driver, thus of travelling safety) especiallyin bad weather, fog and/or insufficientsigns, because of the higher lightingof the side beams which are normallyshaded.
The heavy increase of lighting in theside beams considerably increases drivingsafety because it allows the driver to bet-ter see other users at the sides of the
road (pedestrians, cyclists and motorcy-clists).
Very high voltage is needed to triggerthe voltaic arc, after which the supply canbe at low voltage.
The headlights reach their maximum in-tensity after about 15 seconds fromswitching on.
The high luminosity produced by thistype of headlight calls for the use of anautomatic system to keep the headlightbeam aiming constant and prevent daz-zling other vehicles when braking, accel-erating and carrying loads.
The electromechanical system for auto-matic constant beam aiming makes theheadlight aiming device superfluous.
Xenon lights are very long-lasting andfailure is unlikely.
If necessary, have thesystem checked and any
repairs done only by Authorized Al-fa Romeo Services.

The EOBD (European On Board Diagno-sis) system fitted on the car conforms withthe 98/69/EC (EURO3) Directive for 2.0T.SPARK, 2.5 V6 24V, 3.0 V6 24V (S-portronic), JTD, JTD 20V Multijet and JTD20V Multijet (Sportronic) versions andwith the 2001/1/EC level B (EURO4) Di-rective for 3.2 V6 24V version.
This system continuously monitors thecomponents of the vehicle related to e-
missions; it also indicates, when theUwarning light comes on on the instrumentpanel, that the components in questionare in poor condition.
IMPORTANT After the problem hasbeen resolved, to completely check thesystem, the Alfa Romeo Authorized Ser-vice Station must carry out tests on a testbench and, if necessary, road tests thatcould be long.
If, when the ignition keyis turned to MAR, theU warning light does
not come on or if, when driving, itlights up and emits a fixed lightor a flashing one, contact an AlfaRomeo Authorized Service Station
as soon as possible.
The objective is the following:
to keep under control the efficiency ofthe system;
to indicate when a malfunction caus-es an increase in the emissions beyondthe threshold established by European
regulations; to indicate the need to replace the
deteriorated components.
The system also has a diagnostic con-nector, which can be interfaced with ade-quate instruments, that enables the errorcodes stored in the control unit to beread, together with a series of specific pa-rameters concerning the operation and di-
agnosis of the engine.

ABSThe car is fitted with an ABS system
which prevents wheel lock when braking,better exploits wheel grip and keeps thevehicle controllable within the limits ofthe available grip also during emergencybraking.
The driver can feel that the ABS is oper-ational by a light pulsing of the brakepedal, accompanied by noise.
This should not be interpreted as malfunc-tioning of the brakes, but it is the signal tothe driver that the ABS system is working:it is the warning that the car is travelling atthe limit of grip and that it is therefore nec-
essary to adapt the speed to the type ofroad on which you are travelling.
The ABS system is an additional part ofthe basic braking system; in the event ofa fault it is disabled, leaving the brakingsystem in the same conditions as a carwithout ABS.
In the event of a failure, though beingunable to rely on the antilock effect,there is absolutely no adverse effect onvehicle braking performance in terms ofbraking capacity.
If you have never used a car with ABSbefore, you are advised to learn how to
use it with a few preliminary trials on aslippery surface, naturally under safetyconditions and fully adhering to the High-way Code of the country concerned. Youare also advised to carefully read the fol-lowing information.
The advantage of the ABS comparedwith the conventional system is that itmakes it possible to maintain maximum
vehicle handling performance also in thecase of hard braking under grip limit con-ditions, avoiding wheel lock.
Do not however expect the braking dis-tance always to be reduced with the ABSsystem: for example, on soft surfacessuch as gravel or fresh snow on slipperysurfaces, the distance might increase.
In order to be able to exploit as far aspossible the possibility of the antilocksystem in the case of need, it is wise tofollow a few pieces of advice.
The ABS exploits theavailable grip in full, but
it cannot increase it; therefore cau-tion is required on slippery surfac-es, without running un-necessaryrisks.

Braking on corners always requires theutmost caution, even with the help of theABS.
The most important piece of advicehowever, is the following:
WARNING Cars fitted with ABS mustonly be fitted with wheel rims, tyres andbrake linings of the type and brand ap-proved by the Manufacturer.
The braking system is completed by theEBD (Electronic Brake Distributor) whichdistributes the braking action through the
ABS control unit and sensors.
Following these instructions you will bein a condition to obtain peak braking per-formance at all times.
If the ABS cuts in, itmeans that the grip limit
between the tyres and the roadsurface has been reached: it is nec-essary to slow down and adaptdriving to the grip available.
WARNING
In the event of a systemfault, with lighting up of
the>warning light, have the ve-hicle checked immediately by Au-thorized Alfa Romeo Services, driv-ing slowly to be able to regain fullsystem performance.
WARNING
When the ABS cuts in andyou feel the pedal pulse,
do not reduce the pressure, butkeep the brake pedal firmlypressed with no fear; this way youwill stop in the shortest space pos-sible, compatibly with the condi-
tions of the road surface.
WARNING
The car is fitted with anelectronic brake distrib-
utor (EBD). If the>andxwarn-ing lights come on at the same time
when the engine is running, thereis an EBD system fault; in this case,violent braking may lock the rearwheels too early, with the possibil-ity of skidding. Drive extremelycarefully to the nearest AuthorizedAlfa Romeo Services to have thesystem checked over.

BRAKE ASSIST (Brake assist inan emergency)
This system, that cannot be cut out, rec-ognizes emergency braking on theground of the brake pedal operationspeed and allows to speed up the brakingaction.
On versions fitted with VDC system,Brake Assist is deactivated in the event ofVDC system failure (indicated by theswitching on of the relevant warninglight).
The turning on of the>warning light with the
engine running normally indicatesan ABS system fault. In this casethe braking system preserves itseffectiveness, without howevermaking use of the antilock device.Under these circumstances, the EBDsystem may fail to give top perfor-mance. In this case, too, you arerecommended to contact Author-ized Alfa Romeo Services immedi-ately driving in such a way as toavoid abrupt braking, to have thesystem checked.
WARNING
If thex low brake fluidlevel warning light comes
on, stop the car immediately andcontact the nearest Authorized Al-fa Romeo Services. Indeed, anyleak of fluid from the hydraulicsystem compromises the effective-ness of both the conventionalbrake system and the system withantilock system.

VDC SYSTEM (VEHICLEDYNAMICS CONTROL):GENERAL
The VDC is an electronic vehicle stabilitycontrol system which, acting on thetorque and braking the wheels in a differ-entiated manner, helps to bring the carback to the correct course in the event ofloss of grip.
While travelling the car is subjected to
lateral and longitudinal forces that maybe controlled by the driver up to whenthe tyres offer adequate road-holding;when this falls below the minimum level,the car starts to deviate from the courserequired by the driver.
Above all on rough surfaces (such ascobbles, or due to the presence of water,ice or soil), changes in speed (when ac-
celerating or braking) and/or course(bends or the need to avoid obstacles)can cause the tyres to lose grip.
When the sensors detect the conditionsthat would lead to skidding, the VDC sys-tem acts on the engine and brakes gener-ating a stabilising torque.
VDC SYSTEM OPERATION
The VDC system turns on automaticallywhen the car is started and cannot beswitched off. It is however possible to cutoff operation of the ASR system pressingthe corresponding button on the centreconsole.
The main components of the VDC sys-tem are:
an electronic control unit whichprocesses the signals received from thevarious sensors and brings about themost appropriate strategy;
a sensor that detects the position ofthe steering wheel;
four sensors that detect the rotationspeed of each wheel;
a sensor that detects rotation of thecar around the vertical axis;
a sensor that detects lateral accelera-tion (centrifugal force).
The system performancelevels, in terms of active
safety, should not induce the dri-ver to run pointless and unjustifiedrisks. Driving conduct should al-ways be suited to the conditions ofthe road surface, vision and traf-fic. The responsibility for road safe-
ty is always and anyway the ve-hicle drivers concern.The VDC system helps the driverto keep control of the car in theevent of loss of tyre grip.The forces induced by the VDC sys-tem to control the lack of stabilityof the car always and anyway de-pend on the grip between the tyre
and the road surface.

ASR FUNCTION (ANTISLIPREGULATION): GENERAL
The ASR system integrates the VDC sys-tem controlling the vehicle drive and com-ing into operation automatically eachtime one or both driving wheels skid.
Two different control systems are acti-vated, depending on the skidding condi-tions:
If skidding concerns both drivingwheels, because it is caused by the exces-sive power transmitted, the ASR systemcuts in reducing the power transmitted bythe engine.
If skidding concerns only one driving
wheel, the ASR system cuts in automati-cally braking the skidding wheel, with aneffect similar to that of a self-locking dif-ferential.
The heart of the VDC system is a sensorthat originates from the field of aeronau-tics, which detects rotations of the cararound its vertical axis. The centrifugalforces generated when the car runs on abend are detected by a highly sensitive,lateral acceleration sensor.
The stabilising action of the VDC systemis based on calculations made by thesystems electronic control unit whichprocesses the signals received from thesteering wheel rotation, lateral accelera-tion and individual wheel rotation sen-sors. These signals allow the control unitto recognise the manoeuvre the driver in-tends to do when turning the steering
wheel.The control unit processes the informa-
tion received from the sensors and istherefore capable of detecting the posi-tion of the car and comparing it with thetrajectory the driver would like to followinstant by instant. In the event of a dis-crepancy, the control unit chooses andcommands the most suitable action to
bring the car back to the required coursewithin a fraction of a second: braking oneor more wheels at a different brakingforce and, if necessary it reduces thepower transmitted by the engine.
The corrective actions are changed andcontrolled continuously until the car re-turns to the required course.
The action of the VDC system consider-ably increases the active safety of the ve-hicle under many critical situations and itis particularly useful also when the road
surface grip conditions change.
For the VDC, ASR andABS systems to work
correctly, the tyres must be of thesame brand and type on allwheels, in perfect conditions andabove all of the specified type,brand and size.

The action of the ASR system is particularly helpful under the following condi-tions:
Skidding of the inner wheel on abend, due to the effect of the dynamicchanges of the load or over-accelerating.
Excessive power transmitted to thewheels, also in relation to the conditionsof the road surface.
Acceleration on slippery, snowy or icysurfaces.
In the case of loss of grip on a wetsurface (aquaplaning).
TURNING ON THE ASRFUNCTION
The ASR function turns on automaticallyeach time the engine is started.
When travelling it is possible to switch thesystem off and on again pressing the switch(A-fig. 144) on the centre console.
The warning light (B-fig. 144) on theswitch turns on to indicate that the sys-tem is off.
If the function is turned off while travel-ling, it will turn on again automaticallythe next time the engine is started.
IMPORTANT When driving on snow,with snow chains fitted, if may be helpful
to switch off the ASR function: in theseconditions in fact, skidding of the drivingwheels when moving off helps to obtainbetter traction.
CUTTING IN OF THE VDCSYSTEM
The cutting in of the VDC system is indi-cated by the flashing of the warning light(A-fig. 145) on the instrument cluster,to inform the driver that the car is in criti-cal conditions of stability and grip.

If the electrical control fails to work it isstill possible to open the flap by pullingthe cord (A-fig. 152) on the right-handside of the luggage compartment.
Access to the cord is gained opening thelid (B).
IMPORTANT The fuel tank is sealedhermetically and pressure may build upinside. Any noise of rushing air when thecap is removed is perfectly normal.
If necessary, replace thefuel filler cap only byanother original one,
otherwise the efficiency of thefuel vapour recovery systemcould be compromised.
The fuel cap is released from inside thecar pushing the button (A-fig. 150)with the engine off.
When refuelling the cap can be hung tothe flap (A-fig. 151) using the hookprovided.
To avoid misplacing it when refuelling,the cap is connected to the filler neckwith a cord.

The car is equipped with a safety switchwhich is triggered in the event of a crashto interrupt the flow of fuel and stoppingthe engine as a consequence. This alsoprevents fuel leaks due to fuel linesbreaking.
If no leaks or damages to electric de-vices (e.g.: headlights) are found and thecar can be restarted, reactivate the fuelcut-off switch. Follow the instructions giv-en below.
If, after an accident, youcan smell petrol or see
that the fuel feed system is leak-ing, do not reset the switches to
avoid the risk of fire.

PROTECTION
The design and construction of the vehi-cle have not only been developed withthe traditional aspects of performance
and safety in mind but also take into ac-count the increasingly pressing problemstied to protecting the environment.
The choice of materials, techniques andparticular devices are the result of workwhich has made it possible to drasticallyreduce the harmful effects on the environ-ment and guarantee respect for the sever-est international norms.
MATERIALS
None of the components of the vehiclecontain asbestos. The padding and the cli-mate control system do not contain CFCswhich are held to be responsible for thedestruction of the ozone layer.
The colouring agents and the corrosioninhibitors used on the nuts, screws andbolts do not contain cadmium or chromewhich could pollute the atmosphere orwater tables.
(Petrol engines)
Catalysts
The exhaust system is fitted with a sys-tem of catalysts formed of precious metalalloys housed in a stainless steel contain-
er which withstand high operating tem-peratures.
The catalysts convert unburned hydro-carbons, carbon monoxide and nitric ox-ides in the exhaust gas (even in minimalquantity, thanks to the electronic ignitionand injection systems) into non pollutingcompounds.

The lambda sensors detect the oxygencontent in the exhaust gas.
The signals transmitted by the Lambdasensors are used by the electronic controlunit of the injection-ignition system to ad-just the air-fuel mixture.
Anti-evaporation system(only petrol versions)
As it is impossible, even when the en-gine is switched off, to prevent the forma-tion of fuel vapours, a system has beendevised which traps them in a special car-bon container.
During operation of the engine thesevapours are withdrawn and sent to com-bustion.
(diesel engines)
Oxidising catalytic converter
Converts the polluting substance in theexhaust gases (carbon monoxide, un-burnt hydrocarbons and particulate), thus
reducing the fumes and smell that aretypical of diesel engines.
The catalytic converter consists of astainless steel case that houses a ceramichoneycomb coated with noble metal usedas a catalyst.
Exhaust gas recirculation system(E.G.R.)
This system recycles, i.e. re-uses, avarying percentage of the exhaust gasesdepending on engine operating condi-tions.
It is used, when necessary, to control ni-tric oxides.
Due to the high temper-ature reached while the
catalysts are working, it is advis-able not to park the car over in-flammable material (paper, fueloils, grass, dry leaves, etc.).
