t is anticipated tha t d l standard shell now fired in 105-mmhowitzers will be satisfactory lor use in the T9. The cartridgecase which has a plastic blow-out plug in the base has a ca-pacity of approximately 300 cubic inches. Due t o its largerdiameter there is no likelihood of its being mistaken for regular105-mm ammunition.
Initi al firing tests t o date indicate th at velocities of approxi-mately 1 050 I/s with t he 105-mm Shell H.E. IZ1 are obtainedwith granular powder within the pressure limits of th e T9Howitzer. Range is approximately 7 500 yards. Th e ammuniti onis semi-fixed and the complete round will weigh approximately51.5 pounds.
The fragments o the plastic blow-out plug in the base ofthe cartridge case t he rearward flash of the propellant andthe dust and stones picked up by the gases creates an unsafearea directly in back of t he howitzer for about 100 yards. Saf etyrestrictions will be determined.
