To adjust
Safe seating position
8/2/2019 2003 Manual M3 Coupe
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/2003-manual-m3-coupe 43/158
For relaxed and fatigue-free driving youshould select a sitting position thatreflects your personal requirements. In
combination with the safety belts andairbags, the correct seating positionplays an important role in enhancingoccupant safety in the event of an acci-dent. To ensure that the vehicle's safetysystems provide you with optimal pro-tection, we request that you direct your
careful attention to the following sec-tion.For supplementary information ontransporting children, refer to page 55 .
Sitting safely with airbagsAlways maintain an adequate dis-tance between yourself and the
airbags. Always hold the steering wheelby the rim to keep any chance of injuryto hands or arms to an absolute mini-mum should the airbag be deployed.Never allow any objects, individuals oranimals to obstruct the areas betweenpassengers and airbags. Never use thefront airbag's cover as a storage tray orsupport for objects of any kind. Neverallow front passengers to rest their feetor legs on the airbag cover. <
For airbag locations and additionalinformation on airbags, refer topage 53 .
Sitting safely with safety beltsNever allow more than one personto wear a single safety belt. Never
allow infants or small children to ride ina passenger's lap. Avoid twisting thebelt while routing it firmly across thepelvis and shoulder, wear it as snuglyagainst your body as possible. Do notallow the belt to rest against hard orfragile objects in your pockets. Do notroute the belt across your neck, or run itacross sharp edges. Be sure that thebelt does not become caught or
jammed. Avoid wearing bulky clothingand pull on the lap belt periodically toretension it over your shoulders. In theevent of a frontal impact, a loose lapbelt could slide over the hips, leading toabdominal injury. In addition, the safetybelt's restraint effectiveness is reduced
if the belt is worn loosely. Expectantmothers should always wear theirsafety belts, taking care to position thelap belt against the lower hips, where itwill not exert pressure against the
abdominal area. Leave the rear safetybelts in the holders, if they are notneeded, to avoid unwanted movement
from the safety belts at high speeds. <
For information on using the safetybelts, refer to page 47 .

restraint device or child seat, please read the following:
Never install a rearward-facing child-restraint system in the front passengerseat of this vehicle.Your vehicle is equipped with an airbagsupplemental restraint system for thefront passenger. Because the backreston any rear-facing child-restraint sys-tem – of the kind designed for infantsunder 1 year and 20 lbs/9 kg – would bewithin the airbag's deployment range, you should never mount such a devicein the front passenger seat, since theimpact of the airbag against the childrestraint's backrest could lead to seri-ous or fatal injuries. If it is necessary for a child – not aninfant – to ride in the front seat, certainprecautions should be taken. First, move the passenger seat as far awayfrom the instrument panel as possible. This important precaution is intended tomaximize the distance between the air-bag and the child. Older children

If you do this, the protectionprovided by these systems could beimpaired.Be sure that all occupants – of all ages –remain properly and securely restrainedat all times. <

How the system functionsYou have probably frequently wishedthat you could configure individualfunctions of your vehicles to reflect yourown personal requirements. In engi-neering your vehicle, BMW has pro-vided for a number of options for per-sonal adjustment that can beprogrammed into your vehicle at yourBMW center. The available configuration data fall intotwo categories, according to whethertheir primary orientation is the vehicle –Vehicle Memory – or the individual –Key Memory. You can have up to fourdifferent basic settings adjusted for fourdifferent persons. The only require-ment is that each person uses his or herown remote control key.

The system optimizes vehicle stabilityduring acceleration and when startingfrom a full stop, as well as optimizingtraction. In addition, it recognizesunstable vehicle conditions, such asundersteering or oversteering, and, within physically feasible limits, helps
keeping the vehicle on a steady courseby reducing the engine speed andbrake applications to the individualwheels.DSC starts up automatically each timeyou start the engine.
The laws of physics cannot berepealed, even with DSC. The
results of driving irresponsibly rest withthe driver. We therefore urge you toavoid using the additional safety marginof the system as an excuse for takingrisks.

Hydroplaning: when driving on wet orslushy roads, reduce road speed. If youdo not, a wedge of water can formbetween tires and road surface. Thisphenomenon is referred to as hydro-
planing, and can lead to partial or com-plete loss of traction, vehicle controland braking effectiveness.Driving through water: do not drivethrough water on the road if it is deeperthan 1 ft/30 cm, and then only at walk-ing speed. Otherwise, the vehicle's
engine, the electrical systems and thetransmission may be damaged.Rear parcel tray: never use it to storeheavy or hard objects; otherwise, occu-pants could be injured if the vehicle isbraked hard.Clothes hooks: when suspending cloth-ing from the hooks, be sure that theywill not obstruct the driver's vision. Donot hang heavy objects on the hooks. Ifyou do so, they could cause personalinjury during braking or evasive maneu-vers. <
If you are in a situation that requires fullbraking, you will exploit the full benefitsof the ABS system if you apply maxi-mum pedal pressure – panic stop.Since the vehicle maintains steeringresponsiveness, you can avoid possibleobstacles with a minimum of steeringeffort, despite the full brake application.Pulsation at the brake pedal combineswith sounds from the hydraulic circuitsto indicate to the driver that ABS is in
its active mode.
Cornering Brake Control (CBC)CBC is an advanced engineeringdesign of the ABS. When braking whilecornering at high speed or braking dur-ing high lateral acceleration, or when
braking during a lane change, vehiclestability is improved and steeringresponse is enhanced.

Disc brakesWhen the vehicle is driven only occa-sionally, during extended periods whenthe vehicle is not used at all, and inoperating conditions where brake appli-cations are less frequent, there is anincreased tendency for corrosion of therotors and accumulation of contamina-tion on the brake pads. This occursbecause the minimal pressure that mustbe exerted by the pads to clean therotors by brake applications is notreached.

to ensure that your brake system willrespond with undiminished efficiencywhen you need it.Extended or steep mountain descentsshould be driven in the gear in whichonly minimal periodic brake applica-tions are required. This helps avoidplacing excessive loads on the brakesystem. Stay within the allowable rpmrange. For additional information, referto page 74 .

also driving comfort and – above all else– driving safety that depend on the con-dition of the tires and the maintenanceof the specified tire pressure.
Incorrect tire inflation pressure isa frequent cause of tire damage. It
also significantly influences the road-holding ability of your BMW. Check tireinflation pressures on a regular basis, refer to page 25 , at least every twoweeks and before beginning a longertrip. Incorrect tire pressure can other-wise lead to driving instability, tire dam-age and accidents. <
Tire tread – tire damageInspect your tires frequently for treadwear, signs of damage and for foreignobjects lodged in the tread. Check thetread depth.Tread depth should not be allowed togo below 1/8 in / 3 mm, even thoughthe legally specified minimum treaddepth is only 1/16 in / 1.6 mm.Below 1/8 in / 3 mm tread depth, thereis a great risk of hydroplaning, even atrelatively moderate speeds and with
only small amounts of water on theroad. Tread wear indicators in thetread-groove base – see arrow – aredistributed around the wheel circumfer-ence and are labeled on the tire side-
tire. A flat tire greatly impairssteering and braking response, and canlead to complete loss of control overthe vehicle.Avoid overloading the vehicle so that
the permitted load on the tires is notexceeded. Overloading can lead tooverheating and internal tire damage. You could have a blowout as a result.Unusual vibrations encountered duringnormal vehicle operation can indicatetire failure or some other vehicle defect. This type of problem can be caused bycontact with curbs, etc. This is also truefor irregularities in the vehicle's han-dling characteristics, such as a pro-nounced tendency to pull to the left orright. The relative perfor-mance of tires depends upon the actualconditions of their use, however, andmay depart significantly from the normdue to variations in driving habits, ser-vice practices and differences in roadcharacteristics and climate.
TractionThe traction grades, from highest tolowest, are AA, A, B and C.
The traction grade assigned tothis tire is based on straight-

hydroplaning, or peak traction charac-teristics. <
TemperatureThe temperature grades are A – thehighest – B and C, representing thetire's resistance to the generation of
heat and its ability to dissipate heatwhen tested under controlled condi-tions on a specified indoor laboratorytest wheel.Sustained high temperature can causethe material of the tire to degenerateand reduce tire life, and excessive tem-perature can lead to sudden tire failure. The grade C corresponds to a level ofperformance which all passenger cartires must meet under the FederalMotor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 109.
