WE CONNECT We believe information, knowledge sharing and networking are irreplaceable catalysts for transformation and growth and part of our fundamental mission at WAN-IFRA. The more we know, the better we are prepared for tough decisions in turbulent times.
We also believe that information and knowledge, even the most critical and strategic business news, has only limited value if not brought into perspective. This is particularly so given the world is undergoing such deep reshuffling.
To build the future, we cannot be tied to the present day and current technology. The exponential inclusion of digital in our daily lives outstrips our ability to reframe our ethical, civic and legal approach to digital decision making. Indeed, no technology is immune from ethical and regulatory challenges.
Stay ahead of this exchange and join the conversation with our members. WAN-IFRA not only delivers critical tools and news to build the capacity of its individual members, but is also consolidating its position as a leader in the global conversation around media freedom, media policy and global governance issues that matter to the future of free and independent news publishing.

Our mission is to defend and promote press freedom, and help independent news publishing companies to succeed in their transformation process, increase their business, and perform their crucial role in open societies.
We operate two international headquarters based in Paris and Frankfurt, with regional offices in Singapore, Chennai, and Mexico City, with a staff of 50. we draw on the collective pool of strengths and skills to the benefit of each member of our community.
We are passionate about the future of news, through promotion of a free press, quality journalism, editorial integrity, and adoption of these values by new generations.
We believe that business sustainability is the best guarantee for publishers to remain independent and contribute to freedom of expression in open societies.
We are solution driven, delivering services through which members can find solutions to their challenges.

WAN-IFRA believes that increasing media freedom directly strengthens democracy and human rights and is a foundation of societal development, be it economic, cultural or political. This has been a guiding principle of WAN-IFRA for more than six decades of global advocacy and development work.
WAN-IFRA applies a dual approach to supporting media freedom: It addresses political and structural constraints to media freedom through advocacy, and applies development to strengthen the capacity and networks of the media and their representative institutions.
Advocacy actions include large scale lobbying campaigns, coordinated press freedom missions, awareness raising activities and events to strengthen legal and regulatory frameworks, reduce censorship and confront other challenges to editorial and economic independence of media.
WAN-IFRA's network of influential publishers and editors provides it with access to the highest levels of government and other institutions. This network also contributes to development actions, which include capacity building initiatives such as skills development training, coaching, mentoring, networking and skills-exchange activities. WAN-IFRA often engages in both advocacy and development actions in parallel.
Our 2015-2017 Media Freedom Programme aims to assist meaningful change in more than 25 countries across the Middle East and North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa and South East Asia, as well as certain hotspots in Europe and Latin America. Within each of the selected intervention countries, there is significant potential for democratic growth to take hold and flourish. WAN-IFRA believes that media is at the heart of unlocking and supporting this potential within any society.
Our media freedom programme aims to:
1. Improve citizen empowerment and engagement through broader access to independent media;
2. Better protect media against political, economic, and legal pressures, as well as physical harm;
3. Empower media with greater potential to bring about positive social change (poverty reduction, equality and human rights);
4. Ensure gender equality in media;
5. Provide more tools for citizens to advocate on behalf of media freedom and democracy.
Join the Media Freedom Brain Trust Our Brain Trust helps media in emerging, transitional, or post-conflict countries succeed as agents of change in their societies. Members engage with WAN-IFRA’s work by sharing their expertise.
