Dying Alone
Over the past few decades, the number of Japan seniors living alone has risen sharply. Many of them are dying in
their apartments, only to be discovered weeks or even months later by neighbours alarmed by the smell. Lonely
deaths, or kodokushi, have become so common that companies have even emerged specializing in cleaning up
the apartments of the deceased.

The Coca Trap
Growing coca leaf is the only way to put food on the table for many in rural Colombia. Coca, which is the base
substance for making cocaine, is the only livelihood they can rely upon. Most Colombia’s coca growers say they
only do it because they have no alternative options and distance themselves from rapacious drug traffickers.

Where Childhood Died
During the war in Syria, children in areas controlled by Islamist groups were involuntarily recruited as
fighters and forced to witness barbaric executions. The Syrian Army has now taken back control, but these
children are still haunted by what they saw, what was done to them, and the brainwashing they received.

My Forever Family
All over Russia, residential homes are filled with thousands of orphaned and abandoned children with mental
and physical disabilities. Many are in remote regions far from proper health care facilities or where there are few
qualified medical staff. All too often the children are unwanted meaning many display challenging behaviour,
which is why doctors, nurses and volunteers from a charity called ‘Road of Life’ visit regional homes. They take
kids who can’t be treated locally to doctors in Moscow and try to find them new homes and families. On one
trip they meet shy teenager, Sasha who's hearing-impaired, and cheeky nine-year-old, Yulia, who has an
orthopaedic condition. The two travel to Moscow with the team for treatment and to find new 'forever' families.

The Philippines’s controversial President Rodrigo Duterte came to power on his promise to crack down on
crime. Dubbed “The Punisher”, he addressed his subjects, encouraging them to kill drug addicts. However,
his inauguration was followed by a wave of extrajudicial killings of alleged drug dealers and now he
denies any involvement with the vigilante violence. A dramatic increase in brutal street executions
coincided with the start of “Project Duterte”, the police programme aimed at “Drug Use and
Trafficking Elimination thru Rehabilitation, Training and Enforcement”, many Filipinos claim they have
lost all trust in the country’s law enforcement.

Like many young men, Bardip fell in love with a girl at college, got married, and settled down to have a
family. However, four years later, he and his parents were murdered by the bride’s relatives, who were
angry that she had married outside her caste and without their consent. Such Nuptials, though legal, are
considered a dark stain on the reputation of parents. Seventy percent of marriages in India are still
arranged and young couples that dare to marry for love risk honor killings, severe beatings, and
kidnappings. The police often do little or are even complicit in these cases.

Sea Life Savers
Europe’s super-trawlers have fished their own waters clean. Now, they have appeared off the coast of
Africa. One West African nation is ready to fight for its fish stocks. The government of Gabon has teamed
up with a militant conservation group called Sea Shepherd, whose members are notorious for employing
extreme tactics to thwart marine poaching. One of the group’s nine ships, the Bob Barker, is now patrolling
the country’s coast with Gabonese soldiers on board. Its crew is seeking, boarding, and inspecting
suspicious looking ships that may be involved in illegal fishing.

Water has become a luxury for the people in the Indian state of Punjab. Thousands of villages here rely on
water deliveries from elsewhere. People have to pay exorbitant prices for water that their state once had
in abundance. Farmers can no longer afford to grow food, their crops are dying and they are left with
enormous debts. The devastation has led many to take their own lives. Meanwhile the authorities turn a
blind eye to the mass suicides.

The Shegué, the Sorcerer and Che Guevara
The population of the Democratic Republic of the Congo is among the poorest on earth. For decades, the
Congolese have been blighted by a chaotic political situation, bloody civil wars and an ailing economy. This
instability has produced thousands of homeless children. Some lose their parents in armed conflicts, others
run away from homes too impoverished to support them. More often than not, they are forced to survive by
begging or stealing in the streets. There is, however, one more reason a child can become homeless here.
A shockingly large number of kids are thrown out of their homes after being accused of witchcraft.

Her War: Women VS ISIS
The town of Serekaniye in Syria is the last major town bordering the “Islamic State”. The mainly Kurdish local

People’s Protection Units (YPG) were formed after the Syrian Army's attempts to combat the jihadist threat
failed. Among its fighters are young women, who chose to defend themselves and their families from the
belligerent invaders. RTD visits a YPJ female training camp to learn about these courageous young women
and to see how they train to face the enemy.

Back to Sleepy Hollow, Kazakhstan
Deep in the countryside of Kazakhstan lies a sleepy, little rural village called, Kalachi. In this case though,
the word, “sleepy” is much more than a quaint, idyllic description, it’s literal! The settlement made
international headlines because of an inexplicable “sleeping sickness” that has affected its residents for
over three years and prompted RT Doc’s first visit, in December, 2014. The search for a cause revealed
nothing, so several villagers seized the opportunity to relocate but others could not bring themselves to
leave their birthplace, despite the health risks. RT Doc pays a second visit to discover that medical
science may now be on the verge of unravelling the slumbering mystery.

Albino Africa
People fear them. They are outcasts, treated with contempt. They are frequently beaten and murdered
simply because they are not like other people. Their skin is a different colour. This is not a film about the
African-American civil rights movement in the mid-20th century. These twenty six minutes tell the story
of those with the misfortune to be born an albino in Africa today.
