About the coursesEvery year Islington Council offers many free adult and community learning courses. Our partnership with City and Islington College provides an even greater selection of courses, as well as offering better opportunities for you to develop your skills, gain confidence, get a job or prepare for further education.
Who are the courses for?Council courses are free for Islington residents or parents with children in Islington schools. You must be 19 or over, unemployed, or low waged and receiving benefits to qualify. Some College courses are free and where fees apply, you may be eligible for financial support. College courses are available to anyone, not just Islington residents. For more information see www.candi.ac.uk/adults
Advice, guidance and progressionAs part of your course you will receive ongoing support to help you achieve your learning goals. We will also help you to
explore opportunities for further training and education or how to move into paid or voluntary work.
There are a number of council courses that provide learners with a stepping stone into higher level courses in the College or into employment. Courses include childcare, retail, hospitality, customer service, health and social care, catering and food hygiene.
Through links with the College we will work with you to help you to identify suitable courses for you to progress onto. Please contact one of our main learning centres for details or come and chat to us at the enrolment days.
ChildcareSome courses offer childcare services. This depends on the venue and the course. For council courses the details of crèche facilities will be included in the course tables.
The College has two nurseries, which provide limited places for students’ children aged one to five.

“I felt more confident, gained more access and
learnt things I never knew before”
OfstedIslington Adult and Community Learning were inspected by Ofsted in the first week of March and retained their Good rating (grade 2). Inspectors came and watched lessons, they also spoke to tutors and learners about their experiences. Inspectors told us the service is very, very good; so good in fact, that there were a number of areas where we were outstanding.
Inspectors said they thoroughly enjoyed observing lessons, as well as talking to learners, tutors and partners. They were particularly impressed with our delivery on Maths and Vocational Skills (Employment courses). They said the focus on employment can be seen through the whole service. They were excited by the technology developments coming up that should support learners to have an even richer learning experience. They also said learners were safeguarded well and felt safe. All this shows that ACL is a great place to learn and develop skills for life or for work, as well as being part of your local community.

L ESOLWould you like to improve your ability to read, write, speak and listen in English? If English is not your main language, you can join any ESOL course in Islington. ESOL courses are available at all levels - from complete beginners to Level 2 (GCSE level). Citizenship topics are included in most courses.
In class you can practise skills to help you talk with more confidence and use basic English in everyday life, for example at the shops, in schools, at the doctor or for work.
We also have Contextualised ESOL courses to help you get ready for work. The main content is English language but this will be set in a work context, for example for working in customer service, social or child
care, administration or schools. If you are interested in gaining employment but need help with your language skills join one of our courses.
To join an ESOL course, you will need to take a short test so that we can assess your level and enrol you on the best course for you. Please bring your passport with you to book your assessment at the college.
