Pearisburg Cure Seekers Eternal Flame
In 2001 two Pearisburg town employees were di-agnosed with cancer. It was then that town employee Dora Williams suggested that they form a team for Giles County Relay for Life in honor of their friends, and the Pearisburg Cure Seekers Relay team was born.
The Pearisburg First United Methodist Church Relay team, Eternal Flame, kicked off this year with a Souper Bowl Luncheon and Dessert Auction on Su-per Bowl Sunday. During February team members participated in the “Feb-ruary is Love” campaign to sell luminaria bags, to “honor” and “remember” loved ones. During this time 181 luminarias were sold. Plans are being made to have a drive thru lumi-naria service to light up the names of those held dear. These luminarias will also be displayed at the New River Valley Relay event.
Last year for the lu-minaria ceremony in the church everyone was hon-ored to have Alice Dowdy, one of the organizers of the first Giles County Relay event, as the guest speaker. Alice continues to be pas-sionate for the Relay for Life activities. Last year, and years before, she has organized a luminaria event in her neighborhood and raised money that she has turned in to the American Cancer Society.
Another special treat was to have Don and Susan Allen, from the first Giles County Relay event, as guest speakers at the 2019 survivor dinner and Giles

Dora and coworker Hope Harrell were co-captains for the team until 2004 when Hope took over as captain. Over the years the team has grown and friends and family of town employees come out every year to relay in honor of survivors and loved ones lost to cancer.
From volleyball tour-naments to bake sales, the team has held numerous fundraisers over the years to raise money for the American Cancer Soci-ety. For more information please contact Hope Harrell at harrell@pearisburg.org or call 599-1034.

County Relay event. At the team’s camp site, a special canopy was set up wel-coming back the “Angels Rest Walkers Team” that was established in 1998. Hopes are that this team will continue to come to
local, yearly events. This is a time to honor
and remember, along with a time to fellowship with friends and family; and, most importantly, to raise funds to help in the support of finding a cure.
