lettersfrom the chair
from the president2016 was a banner year for the ADP and we now have our sights set on a spectacular 25th Anniversary year during 2017. As we celebrate our Silver Anniversary together, this year holds special meaning for our organization. I commend the community leaders who had the forethought, vision, desire, and perseverance to combine our chamber of commerce and economic development agency in 1992 to form the ADP. I am very grateful for all those who have served and continue to serve and invest in this great organization. The ADP is a model organization in our state, region, and around the nation.
We unveiled our new website late last year and we will soon be sharing our new logo as we look ahead to what the next 25 years will hold for the ADP and this fine community that we call home. Our commitment is to continue to sharpen our tools so that we add value in the constant pursuit of helping individuals grow personally and businesses thrive professionally. The ADP is a difference maker for Greater Hattiesburg, and in 2017, I encourage you to dive into everything that we have to offer. It is your organization and it will only reach higher heights with your dedicated involvement.
In this edition of The Navigator, I am pleased to say that we are highlighting the arts, which is simply woven into the fabric of our community. The arts allow us to laugh, cry, embrace, express, grow, and give back. My daughter plays the piano and acoustic guitar and one of her friends is an incredible singer. Seeing these two young ladies perform each year at ADP member assisted living facilities and nursing homes is a real treat. Experiencing the joy in the faces of the senior residents is priceless as the music energizes them. You will enjoy reading about various aspects of the arts here in our region and should eagerly anticipate our January First Friday program slated for January 13th that will bring these efforts to life.
I thank Andy Mercier for his service as ADP Chair in 2016 and look forward to serving alongside Evan Dillard, 2017 ADP Chair. Abb Payne will serve as our Vice-Chair and Chad Driskell will be our Treasurer. I am very grateful for all the men and women who proudly serve and invest their time and financial resources to help our organization and region flourish.

Greater Hattiesburg is also known as The Hub City due to its geographic proximity to the state capitol, pristine waters of the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Mobile Bay, and the eclectic culture of New Orleans. With two universities that foster art education and house performance facilities, along with numerous arts organizations that support creative minds and artistic expression, be it through enhanced green spaces, art exhibits, music andtheatrical performances, Greater Hattiesburg is more than a Hub, it’s a Hub of Imagination. At the epicenter of this movement are local organizations that strive to not only enhance the community’s quality of life, but to enrich the lives of those who live in the community.
Cited as one of the fastest growing creative economiesin the country in 2014, Mississippi employs over 60,000 of its citizens, in this sector, which represents 2.5 percent of the state’s population over the age of 25 according to census data. Also that year, the $955 million contributed by the creative economyrepresented 3.2 percent of the state’s $101.5 billiongross domestic product, leading Gov. Phil Bryantto declare 2014 as “the year of the creative economy.”Today, communities across the state continue towork with the Mississippi Development Authority andMississippi Arts Commission to secure grants andfunding for programs to make the state’s artists morebusiness savvy. At the local level, the Hattiesburg Arts Council uses its influence and know-how to sponsor local artists by hosting and promoting events such as concert series, exhibitions, children’s theater, and art lectures throughout the year. They also help to identify and foster the development of emerging artists; offering them resources and guidance. Soon to be housed in the former Hattiesburg American building, the new space will feature permanent exhibits of works from world-renowned artists as well as occasional special exhibits.
Hattiesburg Alliance for Public Art (HAPA), formedin memory of local arts patron Mary Dixon Montague, was created in 2014 to place art in the heart of town in a manner that embraces green spaces, stimulates community pride and cultural appreciation. HAPA’s projects have included an inaugural annual outdoor sculpture competition and exhibition, a Little Free Library collaboration with the Hattiesburg Arts Council, and the purchase of several large sculptures by local artists, forpermanent placement at various locations downtown.
The Hattiesburg Concert Association, whose mission is to expand access to the arts and offer opportunities to talented artists through its high caliber and diverse artistic and cultural events, hosts annually, its crown jewel of events, Festival South, a multi-week/multi-genre music festival that has now been expanded to include wine tastings, arts market, a lecture series, and a kids component that inspires the next generation of young artists through educational programs.
At the university level, another community driven entity created for the sole purpose of promoting arts education, and expanding access to regional, national and international arts events and artists, is Partners for the Arts. This initiative is a collaboration between the community and USM’s departments of Art & Design, Theatre, Dance and the School of Music. With 20 years under its belt, Partners for the Arts has raised more than $1 million to support arts programs at USM which have been attended and enjoyed by audiences in Greater Hattiesburg, further contributing to the prominence of art in this community.
When we think of the impact arts has on the community, it affects both the quality of life and socio-economic climate. Visitors, residents and businesses alike are attracted by a community’s vitality across all spectrums. Because art is about crossing boundaries and seeing things in different ways, it can be a vehicle for public discussion, neighborhood revitalization, and attracting andretaining talent. From educating to simply promotingcreative works, support and appreciation of all typesof artistic culture is abundant in Greater Hattiesburg.

families during FestivalSouth.

legislative forumWhere Good Policy is Great for Business
As a business professional, it can be difficult to keep up with the current legislative issues affecting our state. However, policies passed by the legislature can have a tremendous impact on our businesses, schools, infrastructure, and communities.
The ADP’s Legislative Forum provides members with a high-level overview of the current issues being addressed by the Mississippi State legislature. During each of the two sessions, local senators and representatives participate in a panel discussion on hot-button topics, with time for audience questions at the end.

down to businessSmall Businesses Leadership Award
The Small Business Leadership Award was established by William Carey University and the Area Development Partnership in 1990. The annual award recognizing the important contributions small businesses make to the economic, social and cultural life of the community and the particular achievements of one individual or family. The award is given in memory of Dr. Joe Roberts, a former professor of communications at William Carey University and also one of the founders of Aycock-Roberts Furniture.
The Small Business Leadership Award recognizes outstanding ADP-member small businesses within Greater Hattiesburg. These businesses have helped pave the way for the area through community involvement, leadership and exceptional service. Small businesses make up an integral part of the Area Development Partnership, and Greater Hattiesburg as a whole. Their contributions may seem small when compared with those of our area’s top employers, but they are certainly not overlooked.
If you know a small business deserving of this recognition, please submit their name for consideration. Nominations are currently being accepted for the 2017 Small Business Leadership Award. You can nominate a small business at www.TheADP.com. All nominations must be received by 5:00 p.m. on January 27, 2017. Candidates may self-nominate.

YOUNG PROFESSIONALSConnecting and Giving Back to the Community
Pine Belt Young Professionals (PBYP) is all about connecting. Our mission is to provide opportunities for young professionals to connect to each other and the community. The 120+ member organization accomplishes this through hosting events that encourage networking, professional development and community service.
As a young professional, it is important to continually grow and develop. One of the best ways to do this is to learn from those who have found success. We invite inspiring guest speakers to share their experiences with PBYP at our professional development lunches and off the clock events.
Throughout 2016, Pine Belt Young Professionals have learned from various speakers on topics such as civic engagement, entrepreneurship, community involvement, service, and more. The group also participated in many community events such as Live at 5, the Hattiesburg Historic Neighborhood Association’s Halloween Parade, and most recently, Christian Services’ Birthday Party for Jesus.
This year, Pine Belt Young Professionals kicked off their annual service with Christian Services by hosting their “Blue Plate” lunch at Christian Services. Vanessa Henson, Community Relations Director, spoke to the group about the many services providedin Hattiesburg and the mission of Christian Services.
In December, PBYP hosted a Tacky Christmas Sweater Party to collect toys for the Birthday Party for Jesus, and was proud to donate a car filled with toys to local children in need.
PBYP loves giving back to our community. We providemany opportunities to become involved in the community through services projects, volunteering, and participating in community events.
