This has already been a rewarding year so far for the Area Development Partnership. As we work to promote and enhance Greater Hattiesburg, we look toward the future of not only the ADP, but also our growing community. Many diverse businesses and industries call Greater Hattiesburg home, ranging from small businesses to international corporations.
I am especially excited about this issue of The Navigator as the cover story explains the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. As President and CEO of a regional healthcare provider, I understand the significance of educating our community on how to live a healthy and active lifestyle. Please join us for the May First Friday as we host a Healthy Living Fair with multiple businesses around the area who will be giving tips and tricks on how to stay healthy.
Our 25th Anniversary is off to a fabulous start. We unveiled our new website in late 2016 and released our new logo last month. Our previous logo served us very well, but it was time for a fresh start as we look ahead to the next 25 years. The logo was inspired by words from staff and the membership used to describe the ADP. Our new logo really pops with blue, green and orange.
It was great to have Governor Bryant in town March 23rd celebrating The District at Midtown Groundbreaking. This mixed-use development will be anchored by the state’s first Hotel Indigo, a boutique hotel that adds an awesome new vibe to our hotel portfolio. The development will bring many new restaurants and retailers to the area and will have fabulous apartment options. It is truly a game changing project for our community. Thanks to everyone who has played a role in helping redevelop Midtown Hattiesburg. Rob Tatum, President, CR Properties, LLC, will keynote our April 7th First Friday Breakfast.
May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, so we are elated to have our May 5th First Friday program focus on health. It is important that we all strive to improve our overall mental, spiritual and physical well-being so that we can have a healthier, more fulfilled existence, which also leads to a more productive workforce fueling our regional economy. With over 9,000 healthcare employees and world-class healthcare educational offerings at our universities and community colleges, this is a crucial topic. Join us for a First Friday Healthcare Luncheon May 5th.
We just completed another amazing HUBFEST in Downtown Hattiesburg, wrapped up a busy season of legislative affairs, rolled out great speakers and topics for our Rise Up series, held a Diversity in Business Exchange, executed JumpStart, hosted numerous PBYP events to engage our young, emerging leaders, kicked off another Leadership Pinebelt Class and more. Your chamber is adding value so that you can grow personally and flourish professionally. Also, your economic development team is leading the way in Mississippi. During 2016, our region led the state in the number of net new jobs created among metro areas. Our 2017 pipeline is full of exciting projects and we will work tirelessly to put our community in the best possible position for success.

Healthy LIvingLive, Work and Play Well
In a perfect world we’d all maintain a healthy, balanced nutrition, lead physically active lifestyles, and live in an environment that is free of toxins and has only pure air to breathe. But let’s face it, there’s really no such thing as perfect, and nowadays everyone is busy juggling multiple responsibilities at once as we navigate fast and furiously from day to day. So how can subtle changes be incorporated into our health regiment without spending more money, time and effort? One word…Wellness. The concept of wellness is much more than merely physical health, exercise or nutrition but rather the full integration of physical, mental and spiritual well-being. Becoming aware, and making choices toward a healthy and fulfilling life is a dynamic process of change and growth.
As part of the ADP’s 5-year action plan for economic development, our goal is to raise awareness about health and wellness opportunities here in Greater Hattiesburg, and encourage you to get annual check-ups, make healthier choices and find work/life balance to help prevent stress related illnesses.
There are eight dimensions of wellness: emotional, environmental, financial, physical, occupational, social, spiritual and intellectual. Each dimension of wellness is interrelated with another. Each dimension is equally vital in the pursuit of optimum health. One can reach an optimal level of wellness by understanding how to maintain and optimize each of the dimensions of wellness.
1. EMOTIONAL WELLNESS
Emotional wellness relates to understanding your feelings and coping effectively with
stress. It is important to pay attention to self-care, relaxation, stress reduction and the development of inner resources so you can learn and grow from experiences.
2. ENVIRONMENTAL WELLNESS
Environmental wellness inspires us to live a lifestyle that is respectful of our surroundings.
This realm encourages us to live in harmony with the Earth by taking action to protect it. Environmental well-being promotes interaction with nature and your personal environment. Everyone can have a strong environmental conscious simply by raising their awareness.

3. FINANCIAL WELLNESS
Financial wellness involves the process of learning how to successfully manage financial
expenses. Money plays a critical role in our lives and not having enough of it impacts health as well as performance. Financial stress is repeatedly found to be a common source of stress, anxiety and fear.
4. PHYSICAL WELLNESS
Physical wellness relates to maintaining a healthy body and seeking care when needed.
Physical health is attained through exercise, eating well, getting enough sleep, paying close attention to the signs of illness and getting help when needed.
5. OCCUPATIONAL WELLNESS
Occupational wellness is about enjoying your occupational endeavors and
appreciating your contributions. This dimension of wellness encourages personal satisfaction and enrichment in one’s life through work.
6. SOCIAL WELLNESS
Social wellness helps you perform social roles effectively and comfortably, and create
a support network. This dimension of wellness allows you to not only develop encouraging relationships with peers, as well as fosters personal relationships with family, friends and significant others.
7. SPIRITUAL WELLNESS
Spiritual wellness allows you to develop a set of values that help you seek meaning and
purpose. Spirituality can be represented in many ways, for example, through relaxation or religion. But being spiritually well means knowing which resources to use to cope with issues that come up in everyday life.
8. INTELLECTUAL WELLNESS
Intellectual wellness involves having an open mind when you encounter new ideas
and continuing to expand your knowledge. It encourages active participation in scholastic, cultural and community activities.

LEADERSHIP PINEBELTThe Area Development Partnership (ADP) is pleased to announce the Leadership Pinebelt Class of 2017. Leadership Pinebelt cultivates emerging community leaders who dedicate themselves to the betterment of Greater Hattiesburg.
The program is designed to broaden the base from which emerging leadership is derived and to serve as a catalyst for increasing diversity among future leaders. Class sessions will focus on enhancing leadership skills and garnering a better understanding of the position of healthcare, cultural arts, economic development, military and industry – the region’s essential assets. Over the next eight months, class participants will also design and implement group projects that address a
need/opportunity in Greater Hattiesburg.
“The 2017 Leadership Pinebelt class encompasses a very diverse group of individuals, all who have outstanding professional backgrounds and are positively enhancing the community. We are
excited about the upcoming year and look forward to working with such a talented group of individuals as they continue to enhance their leadership skills,” said Rebecca Brown, Co-Chair of the Leaders Steering Committee.
Class members are selected based on specific criteria including: time commitment, community involvement, diversity and willingness to work toward collective goals.

ADP Looks to the FutureADP Unveils New Logo
For 25 years, the Area Development Partnership (ADP) has represented the region’s businesses and their employees. That history of service and growth is blended with an eye toward the economic future for Greater Hattiesburg. The organization recently unveiled a new logo combining those elements.
The updated look is modern, crisp and in-sync with the ADP’s newly renovated website. Elements form the organization’s mission to enhance quality of life through economic progress are at the forefront, and emphasize its role to help the region continue to flourish. The colors blue, green and orange were derived from feedback the membership provided when asked via survey to give one-word quotes that best describe the ADP. Blue signifies the organization’s longstanding reputation as
professional and stable, while Green represents growth and communication with stakeholders. Orange stands for positivity and enthusiasm. “We are pleased to unveil the ADP’s new logo to our members and community. The previous logo served us very well, almost 25 years to be exact.
The new logo tells a story about who we are as an organization,” said Chad Newell, President of the ADP. “The colors are blended to show upward momentum as we continue to move the economic needle forward, as well as positivity and enthusiasm which are at our core. There are also elements of a star interwoven into the design, as we certainly intend to continue our bold leadership here in the Gulf South.”
The new logo was designed by The Focus Group in Ocean Springs, MS.
