A study and analysis of the interaction between teachers and students in elementary school English classes

The main objective of this study is to analyze the interaction in English lessons at a private
elementary school. Students who are eight to nine years old in the 3rd grade take English lessons as a
foreign language twice a week at Tezukayama Elementary School in Japan. Lessons focus on teaching
four language skills including listening, speaking, reading and writing in their school English
curriculum. Two native speakers, and a Japanese English teacher are in class with a homeroom
teacher. Also, a homeroom teacher supports students’ English learning during morning sessions
selected by the Japanese English teacher.
In this research, teachers and students’ interaction during the lesson is recorded, and analyzed in
order to see the quality and quantity of utterances. The result of this research reflects that interaction
related to reading skill was less in comparison to other skills, reflecting a need to improve students’
reading skills in the future.
