Biological Resource Centres (BRCs)

BRCs are an essential part of the infrastructure underpinning biotechnology. Theyconsist of service providers and repositories of the living cells, genomes of organism, and information relating to heredity and the functions of biological systems. BRCscontain collection of culturable organism, replicable parts of these, viable but not yetculturable organism cells and tissues, as well as data bases containing molecular, physioligical and structural information relevant to these collecions and relatedbioinformatics. BRCs must meet the high standards of quality and expertisedemanded by the international community of scientist and industry for the delivery ofbiological information and materials. They must provide access to biological resourceson which R&D in the life sciences and the advancement of biotechnology depends.

Expertise

• Professional repositories of biological samples (Paskal et al., 2018)

• Long term storage and conservation facility for biological specimens to support future investigations (EC, 2006)

• Essential research tool, Web

• Functional units

• Scientific community service (Morente et al., 2008)

• Service tool (Morente et al., 2008)

• Long-term storage of biological samples for research or clinical purposes (Hallmans and Vaught, 2011)

BIOBANKS AND INFECTIOUS DISEASES: a successful story

THE ROLE OF BIOBANKS FOR INFECTIOUS DISEASES: a less successful story

• 2008: Ebola positive sera• 2009: Ebola antibodies detected in

Ghanaian bats (2012 report)• 2016: Ebola outbreaks

• 1.6 billion dollars mobilized by the World Bank for Ebola

Could the Ebola outbreak havebeen different if small investiments

had been made to collect fieldsamples after the intial report?

• 50% of published research cannot be replicated

• In 2000-2010, 80,000 patients took part in studiesthat were later retracted beacuse of mistakes or

improperties

BIOBANKS AND RESEARCH

-Only 0.95% of the 20,200 strains includedin the 2008 issues of 8 EuropeanMicrobiology Journal were deposited in public collections

-Only 0.03% of 12,000 strains included in 2 2009 issues of the Journal of Clinical Microbiology are deposited in public collections

DEPOSITING IN A BIOBANK IS WORTHWILE!!!!
