February 2018 If I had my child to raise over
I’d build self-esteem first and the house later
I’d finger paint more and point the finger less
I would do less correcting and more connecting
I’d take my eyes off my watch and watch with my eye
I’d take more hikes and fly more kites
I would care to know less and know more to care
I’d stop playing serious and seriously play
I would run through more fields and gaze at more stars
I would do more hugging and less tugging
I’d see the oak tree in the acorn more often
I would be firm less often and affirm much more
I’d care less about the love of power
More about the power of love
MESSAGE FROM ADMINISTRATION As we look to the second half of the school year, we celebrate the many accomplishments and activities of the past months and look forward to the busy time ahead as the days get longer and the weather gets warmer. We begin the celebration of Lent this month. Lent is like a time out. The Church says to each one of us, ‘Go out into the desert like Jesus and with Jesus.” Lent is a time out to regain control of our lives; a time to recognize how our actions affect others; a time out to do the right thing for its own sake; a time out to consider the changes that we need to make in our behaviors and what preparations we need to make in our lives as we journey towards Easter. May your Lenten journey bring you into deeper relationship with Jesus. God Bless Mr. B. Campbell Mr. A. Hulse Principal Assistant Principal

ACCOUNTABILITY SURVEY As an annual check-up on the education system, the Accountability Pillar provides an opportunity for Alberta Education and school authorities to ensure that we are equipping students for success. The Accountability Pillar uses a set of 16 indicators. Data on these indicators consists of surveys of students, parents and teachers on various aspects of education quality, student outcomes such as dropout and high school completion rates, and provincial assessments of student learning. From January to the end of February, Alberta Education will be conducting the annual Accountability Pillar Survey. In January, parents of students in grade 4 will receive a survey in the mail from Alberta Education. In February, students in grades 4, 5 and 6 and all teachers will be completing their surveys online at school. All surveys are anonymous and ask questions about experiences with your school. In addition to English and French, the parent survey is available in Chinese, Punjabi, Arabic, Blackfoot, Cree, Korean, Spanish, Tagalog and Urdu. Your participation in the survey helps provide important information on the quality of education your child is receiving, so we encourage you to return your survey promptly.
STUDENTS WITH ILLNESS This is certainly the season of colds, flus, etc. Frequently students come to the office not feeling well. We call parents in these cases to pick up students and to take them home. In the event that we cannot reach a parent, we try to make the student as comfortable as possible until someone is able to pick him/her up. Please keep your child at home if he/she is sick. If you have changed work or cell phone numbers, please update the office so that we can have a contact number in case of emergencies. BOOK BUS The Calgary Public Library continues to visit us twice a month with their book bus. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to access library books right here at school! Thank you to the public library for allowing us to take part in this program. ASH WEDNESDAY Parents are welcome to join us as we begin our Lenten journey on Wednesday, February 14th with our Ash Wednesday liturgy. Ashes will be distributed during this liturgy at 2:00pm.

Many thank to the Knights of Columbus from Holy Trinity parish for preparing this scrumptious meal. VALENTINE’S DAY Because Valentine’s Day is on Ash Wednesday, we will be moving any classroom Valentine’s Day celebrations to Tuesday, February 13th. Teachers may choose to allow students the opportunity to share cards or small treats on Tuesday, but Ash Wednesday will be kept as a day of holiness. Please refrain from sending any treats or cards to school on Wednesday.
