Barbco Guided Boring

Conventional Steering Head• A very popular

method of grade control today

• Longest recorded bore with this

method is 880 feet.• Unity Development

2-1/4” high, 17’ to the right.

Controlled Boring System (CBS)

Designed by Jim Barbera at Barbco Inc.

• Incorporated the use of an HHD Sonde mounted on top of casing using a DCI Receiver (Eclipse to F5) we could monitor the location of the casing to a .1% tolerance

• Computer program that allowed the operator to keep track of steering corrections

• Accuracy – depending on soil conditions could be 1” every 100 feet

Boring Machine Tunnel Attachment (BMTA)

• Machine operated from inside and propelled by the Auger Boring Machine

• Provides spoil removal with invert auger in smaller casing

• Independently mounted pipe laser set up at rear of entrance pit provides laser beam to a target mountedinside BMTA and allows operator to monitor line and grade of casing

• Main Electric motor drives cutter head with a smaller motor running Hydraulic power unit to run 4 steeringrams for articulation of the cutter head

• January 2004- first Barbco pilot system.

Utilized 5” OD x 5’ pilot rod with threaded hand collars. Output specifications: 8000 ft./lbs. of torque and 280,000 lbs. of thrust force.

TriBor - Models 30, 36 and 48• Hybrid boring unit incorporating Auger Boring, Pilot tubing and

Horizontal Directional Drilling into one unique system.

GUIDED BORINGPilot tooling

Standard steering tips• 45-degree standard

steering tip (plain or carbide)

• ½” lubrication port

HARD ROCK AIR HAMMER

5 and 8 XL Prospector

GUIDED BORING

Casing phase tooling

Knife reamer- The best way to follow the pilot in soft ground

Conventional cutting head-Limiting the overcut will reduce downward drag on the

pilot

FlexBor System-Limits the overall weight in

the casing. Uses air to excavate the cuttings.
