Bundaberg North State High School 2019
OUTSTANDING LEARNERS
OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS
OUTSTANDING FUTURES
No. 7, May 15th, 2019
Principal’s Report… I hope all our Mums enjoyed Mothers’ Day on the weekend. The weather certainly showed signs of a winter chill in
the air. With winter approaching it is timely to remind everyone of our uniform policy for jumpers and long pants.
Please see attached our dress expectations. Students should only be wearing plain black jumpers with the school logo.
If your son/daughter is unable to wear the uniform on a day they should report to G Block to discuss their concern
with a year level coordinator and receive a uniform pass for
the day.
Since our last newsletter we have had many good news
stories with three Year 12 students winning the CQU
business challenge, three other senior business students
being selected as finalists in the QUT Blueshift competition
in Brisbane, students competing in a district debating
competition, instrumental music students participating in
the Bundaberg District Musicfest and student council
members representing the school at the recent Bundaberg
Regional council Youth Summit, to name a few.
This week the NAPLAN tests are being held for all year 7 and
9 students. The NAPLAN tests are a ‘point in time’
assessment tool that provides students and schools with data to determine where students are at in their learning and
assists schools in identifying gaps in learning. All students are encouraged to sit the NAPLAN tests to provide a full
picture of student achievement levels within the school and also provide students with experience in ‘test conditions’
that they will encounter in their senior schooling. Students are encouraged to attempt all questions to the best of
their ability.
Term 1 reports have been issued. Some students have discussed their progress with their teachers and made plans for
term 2. If your son/daughter has not seen their report please discuss their report with them and/or contact subject
teachers to make a plan for term 2 improvement. If you have not received a report please contact the main office so
that we are able to assist you. (Ph: 4130 0222)
I would like to encourage you all to attend the school Musical – We Will Rock You on May 24th and 25th at 7pm. An
enthusiastic cast and crew have been working hard in rehearsals over the past 12 weeks to produce the show. If you
are a ‘Queen’ fan I am sure you will enjoy the trip down memory lane with all the hits from Queen. The students will
be conducting their final dress rehearsal on Wednesday 22nd May, performing in front of local primary students. A big
thank you to the students and staff involved in the production this year. Good luck with your final rehearsals.

Aussie world report
On the 3rd of April, North High’s grade 11 and 12 physicists
travelled to Aussie World for an exciting day of roller coasters,
food and data collection. We used an app on our phones called
‘SparkVue’, to collect the three dimensional and resultant
acceleration acting on us on the rollercoasters. After
experiencing perfect weather on the trip there, mother nature
decided to rain on Aussie world. Thankfully the rain eased up,
and we could then use the rides for all the data collection we
would need. We all had an amazing time, hopping on rides such
as the ‘Space Shaker’ and ‘The Wasp’, and finishing up with mini golf, before beginning our trip back home.
We are all so thankful for the organisation by the teachers Mr Quinn and Mrs Stevens, for giving us the
opportunity to go to Aussie World. Thank you to Mr Anderson, our Science Operations Officer, for helping to
transport, photograph and accompany us. We are so happy with the result of the trip, and the data that will
be a guideline for our assignments in term 2.

Musicfest 2019
Congratulations to all Bundaberg North SHS students for their wonderful effort in Musicfest 2019. This year
Musicfest was held at the Bundaberg Multiplex under the direction of Mr Warwick Tyrell from Sydney. They
were joined by 100 other students in grades 6 to 12 from across Bundaberg, Childers and Gin Gin to play
together in a large Concert Band. The students concluded the workshop with a concert on Wednesday

2019 interschool teams cross country results
The 2019 Inter School Teams Cross Country was held at St Lukes on the 1st May. North entered 4 boys’ teams. The boys
showed great initiative in organising their own teams and even better North spirit in their attitude to ‘get up and have
a go’!
The event demands that each runner runs a 2km circuit. They then tag their team mate who takes his turn on the course.
With all other schools there the excitement was already high, but as the second and third runner waited for their turn
the nerves grew and the atmosphere of the ‘change
over’ zone only added to the tension.
Our teams did North tremendously proud holding
their own against some quality runners. Their
placings were as follows:
12yrs: 3rd
13yrs: 3rd
15yrs: 8th
Opens: 5th

Celebrating Guidance Officers
From 29th April to 10th May we have been highlighting the important work of our Guidance Officers! Guidance Officers are highly valued members of our school community, forming strong and productive relationships with staff, students, parents and external support agencies. Bringing a broad range of skills and knowledge to the role, Guidance Officers respond to a variety of complex issues in our school. Support offered by Guidance Officers includes providing advice and counselling on
educational, behavioural, vocational, personal, social, family, and mental health & wellbeing issues. Let’s celebrate our guidance officers Judi Hellmuth and Helen Coulton for the support, guidance and inspiration they provide!
International opportunity
International opportunity building on last year’s success
Our host families and school community had a fantastic time last year when we welcomed
Tokyo’s Hakuo high school to North High. Our guests obviously agreed as they have chosen to
return to North again in 2019 and for an extended time period. This will give them a full
weekend to enjoy with their host family, day trip to Childers’ animal parks and 3 days at CQU
doing STEM programmes.
What we need to make this possible are host families!
Would you like to host a student from overseas?
Perhaps experience first- hand another country’s culture?
Or maybe you want to show off what we have in our Bundaberg area?
Well this is your chance as North High is going to be hosting 20 students from Tokyo’s Hakuo HS
during the two weeks Sun 21st July – Sat 3rd August. Please note that host families will receive
payment for hosting students and are responsible for their food and transport to school.
This will be an ongoing programme each year so if you are unavailable in 2019 but would like to
be considered as a host family, for future events, please let us know so that you may be added to our registry of host
families.
We will select families by:
1. Homestay Family application form
2. Blue card check (school can organise a card at no cost to you)
3. House inspection (guests need to have their own bed but may be sharing a room)
4. Matching students with families eg. interests, non-allergies to pets ..
To express your interest or to proceed further with application forms, please visit the information on our website or
email krayn24@eq.edu.au or phone 41300311

Change to school domain name Bundaberg North State High School recently had a change to the domain name which affects our website address and
email address. You may have noticed that our generic school email address changed from
principal@bundnortshs.eq.edu.au to principal@bundabergnorthshs.eq.edu.au
and our website
www.bundnortshs.eq.edu.au to www.bundabergnorthshs.eq.edu.au
This change is welcomed and makes much more sense of our contact address. Please ensure that you update all
contacts you have saved in your phone, ipad, laptop etc to reflect the change. Up until the end of May,
communication to the old domain address will be forwarded to us as a courtesy but after that time will be rejected
and returned to you.

CQUniversity experience day
On Friday 3rd May, Year 12 students were given the opportunity to attend the CQUniversity Experience
Day. This excursion invited Year 12 students from the Bundaberg region and surrounding schools to attend
CQU and be a university student for the day. Students attended activities relating to subjects from Business,
Sciences, Digital Media and Public Health to Psychology, Aviation,
Social Work and Education. Each student got to select their own
preferences and participate in two subjects that interested each
individual. The day was filled with plenty of information, fun
and the students enjoyed themselves and got involved. Overall, it
was a wonderful opportunity that helped the students with
making decisions about their future pathway after Year 12.

P&C - ‘Just do one thing’
We believe that Bundaberg North State High School is a great place due to our small but energetic, friendly school
community. We want to ensure every family (especially new families) have the opportunity to get involved.
Volunteering at school is a great way to meet new people, make friends and your kids get a kick out of knowing that
you are helping to make their school better for them and their friends.
This year one of the priority areas for the school is parent engagement and we would like to encourage you all to
become involved in our ‘Just do one thing’ drive.
We have almost 500 families attending Bundaberg North High. We are hoping that every family can do “Just do one
thing” throughout the year to help make our school the greatest is can be.
