The geography of this region includes rugged,
and plains drained by huge river systems.
CLIMATE:
Caribbean South America location near
the equator means that most of the
region has warm temperatures.
WILFDLIFE:
This region is the home for some remarkable ani-
mal species like: the snakes, the ocelots, croco-
diles, piranhas, toucans, jaguars, ocelots and sev-
eral species of monkeys.

SPANISH CONQUEST
In about 1500 Spanish explorers
arrived on the Caribbean coast ofSouth America. By the 1600sSpaniards and their
descendendants had set up large
estates in Colombia.

The GuianasThe countries of Guyana, Suri-
name, and French Guiana are to-gether known as the Guianas.
Dense tropical rain forests cover
much of this region, which lies
east of Venezuela.
GUAYANAGuyana comes from a South America
Indian word that means land of wa-
ters. The capital is Georgetown. All
of Guyanas agricultural lands are lo-
cated on the flat fertile plains.
Guyana's most important agriculturalproducts are rice and sugar. The popu-
