Cathodic ProtectionCarbon steel and stainless steel (depending on the temperature) exposedto seawater will suffer from corrosion.

The following reactions will occur on the surface:

Anodic reaction: Fe → Fe2+ + 2e- (1)

Cathodicreactions:

O2 + 2H2O + 4e- → 4OH-(2)

2H+ + 2e- → H2(g) (3)The actual corrosion situation is defined by the crossing of the anodic

reaction curve (Eq.1) andthe sum curve for the cathodic reactions (Eq. 2 and 3).

This corresponds to a corrosion potential of Ecorr and a corrosion currentdensity icorr (i = Icorr/Area). The corrosion rate is proportional to thecurrent density icorr.
