CELEBRATING A WORLD OF DIFFERENCES

Congratulations to the Class of 1995! You are the largest group of Seniors to graduate from Colegio Maya since the school's beginning. You are undoubtably the finest group of international graduates in Central America. I've had the privilege to work with you and your teachers. What have we learned together? What are the conditions that have led to the recent growth?

Firstly, Colegio Maya has a vision. We are planning to become the finest International School in Central America. Our Maya 2000 plan was conceived during your Junior year and stage I will be complete by your graduation date. Although you will not use all the new facilities , you have shared in the excitement of building them. You have made a contribution to a bright Maya future.

Your future success beyond Colegio Maya will depend upon many things. Let me share a quote from Helen Keller with all of you.

Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Serious harm, I am afraid, has been wrought to our generation -by fostering the idea that they live secure ili a permanent order of things. It has tended to weaken imagination and unfit them for independent steering of their destinies. Now they are staggered by apocalyptic events and wrecked illusions. They have expected stability andfind non within themselves or in their universe. Before it is too late they must learn and teach others, that only by brave acceptance of change and all time crisis ethics can they rise to the height of superlative responsibility.

How can we be comfortable with such chaos? We must learn to appreciate each other. We must take the time to sit down if for no other reason than to share our hopes and fears. Yes, we believe Guatemala has much to teach us. When we face adversity, action is surely necessary. However, we must not forget to laugh and to love.

A WORLD IN TRANSITION

HIGH SCHOOL The 1994-1995 school year -

produced dramatic changes in the everyday life of high school

students and teachers. The curriculum included new courses and more AP offerings. The bells

stopped ringing, and classes lasted 80 minutes . Self study and transition became a way of life,

and the days of the week had new names--A and B. Although the

athletic· program remained strong, lack of space due to construction generated a mania for ping pong.

Student council elections were hotly contested for the first time in years, and a score of

new activities were initiated. The year produced new challenges, great rewards , and hopes for

the future.

Graduation means the end of many long years of school. In my case, they took place in four schools,

covering three countries. Along the way, a Lot of people have been very important to me, allowing for

an infinite amount of happy moments. To them I dedi

cate the effort needed to get here. They include my parents, brother and sister, grandparents, uncles,

aunts, cousins, and the rest of my farnily. I also thank my friends at the British Schools, ISP, UAS, and

Colegio Maya; Chocho, Mrs. Apolant, Mr. Pate, and all

the other teachers that have guided me on my way.

Above all, I want to thank God, because without him wouldn't be here. GOOD LUCK TO ALL!

Thank you Colegio Maya! Euen though it was not my uolition to be here, it was a great chance to reflect on my pas t life and to plan my future. I really learned a lot of thing in here, but neuer eHplain that in words. Maybe I will just remember in my mind. It was a nice time to learn something new and to haue opportunities, but at the same time, it was also a painful time in my life. But though this trial I grew up more. I think during the time I was in Guatemala, I went from being a child to an adult. I want to say thank you to my parents for taking care of me and supporting me all this time. They are my best support in life. I also remember my best friend Min Jung who is always with me and encourages me euen though we are far away. Finally I want to say thank you to euerybody who helped me in any way.

fZlt one point or another we've looked back upon that long road thn

we've been traveling down and wondered, "Am I in the right direc

tion?" At times it might notfeel like we're moving very fast but

we'vefinally made it to a very significant point in pur lives. AheaG of us there are a lot of new changes and wonderful experiences for

many it can be overwelming. We must take life in stride and make the best of everything and never forget the people who helped. tEo the most wonderful people in my in life; my family , they have ·

always been their to support me, to drive me further when I felt like giving up, cheering me up when I was down, helping me when I was lost and guifling me over the years. Without you, where would I be? I could never thankyou enough for what you have

done for me. To the family: Mom & Dad and the family Steph, Erika. Justin, Jen, Jessy & James.

When I first arrived I had no Idea that I was going to have such a

great time at the Colegio Maya. The people I've met here have

made my senior year memorable. Maybe we had doubts about the

whole Idea of Senior Skip day or we were unsure about what was going to happen with the Prom and our class trip, despite it

all we always stuck together as a group. No one could stop the class once we had an idea going, we're full of determination, well at least till Senior Slump kicked in. Thanks to the Class of !995, Congratulations. May the road rise with you and the wind be at your back ...

Our World 1 9 94- 1 995 What was the world like for us, the

students in the middle school, in the year 1 994- 1 99 5 ? We listened to news on CNN and top story of the year was the O.J . Simpson murder tri al . In a year o f n a t u r a l a n d m a n - m a d e d i s a s te r s , poisonous gas in the Tokyo subways, the continuing war in Bosnia, and the fires , floods and mud slides in California were the most noteworthy. The most important sports s tories that made the headlines included Michael Jordan ' s re turn to the NBA, the end of the baseball strike, the 4 9 ' s S uper Bowl v ic tory , and Brazil ' s fourth World Cup win.

We plug ged ourselv e s in to our Walkmen and CD players and listened to music by Green Day, Boys II Men, Inner Circle, and Garibaldi. In our free time we congregated at the malls and partied with o ur fri e n d s . Mov i e s were a great attraction and our favorites were Forrest G ump, The Lion King, Speed, The Mask, and Nell. After the movies? We ate fast food, especially at McDonald' s and Burger King, and pizza anywhere. We liked TV, but mainly watched comedy shows. The most popular were Fresh Prin ce, Home Impro vemen t, WB, Me & Th e Boys, Friends, Beverly Hills 9021 0, and Melrose Place. When we picked up a book it was probably a mystery, especially a scary one by R, L. Stine or S tephen King .

You could SJ'Ot u s anywhere by our clothes. Guys wore anything baggy and sometimes used bandanas. The girls liked short rops and long skirts, and shoes with platform soles and chunky heels. S ome g uys shaved all or part of their heads, and some girls used hair wrap s . Ear piercing was common for girls and guys, and a few people even pierced the belly buttons!

That was our world, 1 994- 1 995 .
