What an awesome Super Bowl party Scott and Jana Akers hosted for over
50 members and friends. THANK
YOU! The game was a dud but the food, drinks, and company was great.
We had tons of yummy food and more beverages than we could drink – now
that’s saying something!! Thanks to Dawn Young for coordinating the Su-
per Bowl squares game; Scott and Jana
had incredible luck and each won two times! Other winners included mem-
bers Trena Stoddard and Trey
Goulden.
NPYC was well represented at the

met some interesting boat-ers and had a great time.
Let’s get more folks going
next January!
We have lots of fun coming your way! The Events Committee (Chair VC/Ryan
Israel, Comm/Cathy McKinnell, IPC/David Hays, Secretary/Tonia Dollinger,
Linda Knoche, Dawn Sexton, and Stacy Dawn) met and set dates for about a
dozen of the land-based events.
Take a look at the Vice Commodore’s
report and the calendar later in this issue of the Skipper and mark your calendars
for those events. Note in particular the
Flag Raising on Sunday, May 5th and the
Annual Golf Tournament (aka fun day
outside) on Satur-day, July 27th. If you
have ideas for other events that you’d
like to coordinate talk with anyone on
the Events Commit-
tee. We’re bringing back the Chili Cook
-Off and Western Night event (March
30th) so now’s the time to perfect
your recipe and
compete for “Best
NPYC Chili” bragging rights.

Feeling the winter blues? Then join Fleet Captain Harold Seigel this Saturday, Feb. 23rd noon at
CIM to plan the summer cruise and other water-
based activities, all are welcome to participate.
IPC/Hays is coordinating the club’s participation
in the March 2nd Ballyshaners St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Old Town Alexandria. Come on out,
help decorate Jack Stoddard’s 37’ Scarab, ride in the parade, or hand out beads to the spectators.
It’s an awesome experience if you’ve never been
in a parade before.
Thanks for the terrific attendance at the monthly
meetings, be sure to block the third Wednesday of each month off for our meetings. Thanks to
everyone for getting your dues paid, we are way
ahead of previous years thanks to Mike’s efforts. And to the few members with outstanding dues,
please let me know your intentions for
renewal.
Cheers,
Cathy

On behalf of National Potomac Yacht Club, THANK YOU to Scott and Jana Akers for open-
ing their house and hosting an outstanding Super
Bowl party on Feb. 3rd. Over 50 Club members attended which was an excellent start to the
2019 NPYC social season.
Our next Club event is on Saturday, March 2nd for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Old Town
Alexandria. IPC David Hays is leading this event and the current plan is to once again utilize Jack
Stoddard’s go-fast boat on a trailer as our float.
Additional details on the NPYC website and Facebook
page.

In addition, our monthly NPYC Movie Nights at Columbia Island Marina will
resume on Wednesday, June 12th and be
held on the second Wednesday of each
month through Sept. 11th.
We also encourage individual Columbia Island
Docks to start giving some thought to hosting monthly Dock Parties on Friday or Saturday eve-
nings during the boating season.
Look for these and other NPYC marine-based
events (e.g. Raft-ups, Summer Cruise, Float-ins, etc.)
on the calendar page of the Club website at
www.NPYC.com. A cruise planning meeting will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, Feb. 23rd at CIM
to plan these on-water events. We will also have a listing of other area events along the Upper Poto-
mac that may be of interest (i.e. events at
Georgetown Waterfront, DC Wharf, The Yards, Old Town Alexandria, National Harbor, Tim’s Riv-
ershore, etc.).
I’m looking forward to seeing you all at our events
this year.

Fleet Captain’s Report by PC Harold Seigel Page 5

As this slow cold boring winter drags on, all of us avid boaters anxiously wait, as an addict, to warm summer
nights, the smell of fiberglass, salt water, the rumble of
the engines as you turn the key, the laughter from friends
on the docks, a cold brew, dreaming about great adven-
tures to come............Woops! Lost my train of thought. Oh yeah, might be a good time to catch up on reading a
few chapters of Chapmans (you better know what that is, and own a copy), and poke your head down to your boat
to check on things. Speaking of adventures, the Cruise
Planning meeting will be Saturday February 23, 1200 hrs. (Noon) at the marina. Give some thought to not only the
longer cruise, but also where you might want the fleet to travel locally together. Be safe.
"The planning stage of a cruise is often just as enjoyable as the voyage itself, letting one’s imagination loose on all
kinds of possibilities. Yet translating dreams into reality means a lot of practical questions have to be answered."

NPYC January 16, 2019 General Member-ship Meeting
Commodore Cathy McKinnell called the meeting to order at 7:41pm with 59 Members in
attendance.
Vice Commodore Ryan Israel lead everyone in the pledge of allegiance.
Immediate Past Commodore David Hays welcomed Cathy as our new Commodore.
Commodore Cathy McKinnell introduced
our guests.
Steve McConey attend the meeting tonight for
the first time. He is interested in joining the club. He has a 24’ Maxim Bowrider at Bolling. He has
been in the area for 20 years and has been boat-
ing for 10 years. He can trailer his boat to do
water sports. He has twin 11 year old girls.
Rudy Crespin is Stacy Dawn’s new first mate. He
graduated in 1987 from the Naval Academy and drove big ships up to 473’ in length. He also did
computer stuff. He enjoyed teaching sailing les-sons at Belle Haven. He likes sail boats better
than powerboats…with a good engine of course!
He was on the sailing team at the Naval Acade-my.
Cathy reported that the COW was a very nice
event. We had a great turn out and almost eve-
ryone in the meeting had attended the COW.
Please mark your calendar for the second Satur-
day in January next year!
Per the bylaws the Commodore established the following 3 committees that you will hear from in
the coming weeks:
• Entertainment and Activities Commit-
tee
• Membership Committee
• Finance Committee
Cathy gave a special thanks to Norm Wood for his work on the Skipper.
Skipper Editor PC Norm Wood reported that there are glitches in the
website that we are working to fix. He encouraged everyone to read the Skipper. It contains a lot of
important information as well as birthdays and anni-versaries along with photos so it’s a great way to
put names and faces of members together.
Commodore Cathy McKinnell gave a shout out
to everyone that celebrated their birthday last month. We celebrated some of them at the COW
with impromptu singing. She further reported that
we are looking into association with the Yacht Clubs of America and we will decide if it’s worth-
while to invest in that membership at a later date. We will have more speakers at meetings in the fu-
ture. If you have connections let us know. We are looking for a formal speaker for our flag raising
meeting. Tonia Dollinger is the new PRYCA repre-
sentative. PRYCA consists of 23 yacht clubs along the Potomac river. Harold Seigel will stay on as the
CBYCA representative for the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Clubs Association. Thank you to everyone
who has paid their dues. If you haven’t already done
so you can pay then tonight. You can track down
Mike Foster or Scott Akers to do this. Marvin and
Andrea Storey and Allan and Marla Farber have ac-crued 20 years in NPYC and the board approved
their new membership status as life members.
Vice Commodore Ryan Israel reported that he
is putting together the entertainment and activities
committee and we will come up with social calen-
dar. There are some upcoming events to mark on your calendars:
• Sunday, February 3 there will be a Super
Bowl party at Scott & Jana Akers house which is
in the Alexandria area at 5pm. It’s BYOB and please bring a side dish to share to Scott and
Jana’s place. An invitation will be sent to every-one.
• Saturday, March 2 is the St. Patty’s Day pa-
rade. Dave Hays will continue to organize this in
Old Town Alexandria.

He plans to get a boat on a trailer with Jack Stoddard’s help. Thanks Jack!!! The reason
we are in the parade is because in 2012 some
club members saw the parade and the next
year we entered an antique fire truck thanks
to Bob Hotaling. Now we are using Jack’s boat and we usually have someone acting like
they are water-skiing behind the boat.
• Saturday, July 27 is the golf tournament at
Swan Point. Kelly Rodgers is helping out with the tournament this year.
• Saturday, July 21 is the PRYCA Float-in.
Keep an eye out of more details soon.
Rear Commodore Ryan Rodgers lead the
pledge of allegiance. He reported that he is re-sponsible for membership and he thanked every-
one for being here. He asked everyone to be good ambassadors of the club. We have a num-
ber of prospective members here this evening.
Tina Gantz was not here, but she is interested in the club. She was one of the ladies in red at the
COW. Next month Steve McConey is eligible to be voted into the club. Vicki Kinnamon- Kempf
reintroduced herself to the club. She grew up boating on Tilghman Island where her dad was a
waterman. She enjoys the boating and motorcy-
cling seasons. She doesn’t currently own a boat, but at some point she hopes to. She mentioned
that this group is a great bunch of people and she appreciates the water which is why she wants to
join the club. She was introduced at a previous
meeting so she was voted into the club this even-
ing. Welcome Vicki! Treasurer Scott Akers reported that we closed out 2018 with over $20K in the bank
thanks to a lot of people paying their dues along
with the COW early. At the beginning of January with dues coming in and more COW money we
had over $31K in the bank account. The COW was successful with 103 people registered to at-
tend and we saved money this year. Last year we spent $22K and this year we only spent $18,287.
With all that has been paid out we now have a
balance of approximately $12,600.
All in all we are better off than last year.
Fleet Captain Harold Siegel an-
nounced that the PRYCA is having their float-in the week before our golf tour-
ney. He wants to get a sense of where we want to cruise this year (e.g., 3 Sisters, National Harbor, Old
Town, July 4th, etc.) Please talk to Harold about what you all would like to do. For the long cruise we
have to decide if we are going to the bay and then
south to Norfolk, or north to Annapolis. He will set up a meeting next month to concentrate on what we
want to do for the cruise. He noted that when he first started in the club 20 years ago there were only
30 members and dues were $50.
Secretary Tonia Dollinger kindly asked everyone
to sign in on the sheet that is being passed around.
Old Business: None
New business:
• Check on your boat and make sure it is OK
and that there is no ice and snow on it. Please check on your neighbor’s boat too.
• Bob McKinnell is starting to plan a group to
go tandem skydiving. See him if you are interest-
ed.
• Vice Commodore Ryan Israel is looking to line up food for each of our meetings. If you have
connections to get good prices or if there is
something specific you like, please let Ryan know.
• PRYCA COW is January 26th. Sign up soon. Marv and Andi Storey are very active in the
PRYCA and will make an NPYC table. NPYC al-ways sends the Commodore and her “mister”.
It’s only $85 and it’s not open bar.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:18pm.
Respectfully Submitted,
Tonia L. M. Dollinger Secretary
The current bank balance is $12,587.00. Outstanding mem-bership dues that still need to be paid and are being re-
ceived will change this amount. Invoice notices have been
sent out. If you have already paid your dues, please let us
know and we can update the system. Our apologies if this
has happened. We are experiencing some hiccups while we are converting over the new automated billing and collecting
process. NPYC will still take checks mailed to the treasurer or if you prefer in person, we can swipe your credit card.
Thanks, Scott Akers

I had the privilege of attending my first PRYCA (Potomac River Yacht Clubs Association) meet-
ing as the NPYC delegate. I picked up the torch
this year after Ryan Israel served last year as our club rep. Thanks for your service Ryan!!!
NPYC is part of PRYCA which contains 23 yacht
clubs along the Potomac River. I encourage eve-ryone to participate in PRYCA events. It’s a great
opportunity to interact with a larger community
of boating enthusiast from other local yacht clubs.
Some PRYCA events to look forward to this
year are the Cobb Island Summer Kick Off June
7-9, the PRYCA Float-in at Coles Point July 19-21, Dog Days of August 2-4 (location tbd), and of
course the PRYCA COW on January 25, 2020. Registration details for the float-in are shown on
the following page in this Skipper. Let’s try and
register early this year. If we have multiple en-
tries by the Commodore’s Dinner on April 1 we
will be awarded a key point which is vital to win-ning the PRYC Float-In Competition Cup. In
years past NPYC won the Cup numerous years but you “gotta play to win” and we haven’t had
good attendance at the Float-in until last year. So mark your calendar for the July 19-21 weekend
just prior to our Golf Tournament.
Special thanks to Marv and Andi Storey for coor-
dinating our NPYC table at the PRYCA COW. The annual formal event was held on January 26
at the Holiday Inn in Old Town Alexandria to
induct PRYCA’s new bridge and board. A profes-
sional photographer captured photos of at-
tendees with a PRYCA flag as the backdrop. Sou-venir champagne glasses were given to attendees.
The event included a nice dinner, live band, danc-ing and pre-party/after party in a hospitality suite.
Thanks to the members from various clubs that
volunteered to make this happen. Everyone had an amazing time meeting and mingling with other
local yacht club members. Hope you can all join us next year so we can have a strong presence at
this wonderful event!!! Mark your calendars for
this event next year on January 25th, 2020.
Other noteworthy topics that were dis-cussed at the February PRYCA meeting
include:
• Coal ash ponds on Quantico Creek up-
date: Dominion Power will be required to drain
the ponds. Coal ash will be removed by train. It may take 3 years to complete. Check your
newspapers for the latest information.
• PRYCA is collecting information regarding
cell phone connectivity on the Potomac River. If you have any information on major cell phone
carriers (i.e. Verizon, T-Mobil, AT&T, Sprint, etc.) regarding navigation/weather aids, hot
spots, etc. please let me know.
• A fast ferry service on the Occoquan River
has been proposed. This concerned many mem-bers because the ferries create a large wake.
The ferry may be operational in 3-5 years.
All,
We are excited to announce that the PYRCA 2019 Float-In will be held July 19-21 at Coles Point
Marina!!! Please note the following important information:
ONLINE EVENT REGISTRATION: This year, all event registrations will be done
online. Checks will still need to be mailed to complete the registration. The registration link will be sent in March.
CUP POINT FOR EARLY REGISTRATION: Clubs submitting at least two vessel registra-
tion packages with payments when they attend the Commodores' Dinner & Delegate Meeting in April will receive a point toward The Cup!
SNAG-A-SLIP / RECIPROCITY: Coles Point will NOT accept any Snag-a-Slip or reciprocity slip reservations during the event dates. This will enable PRYCA to maintain control of the
event registrations. COTTAGES: Cottages can be reserved through Coles Point Marina. Please mention the
PRYCA 2019 Float In and they will waive the cleaning fee. (Separate event registration re-
quired.) RV HOOKUPS: RV hookups can be reserved through Coles Point Marina. Please mention the
PRYCA 2019 Float In and they will give a $10 off per night hook up fee. (Separate event regis-tration required.)
We have already made a reservation for sunshine that weekend, so I don't think we'll have a repeat of the
monsoon we experienced last year! Please mark the dates on your calendar and spread the word
with everyone in your club!
We're looking forward to seeing you on the water!

We are saddened to report that long time mem-
ber and Past Commodore Brutus Wright passed
away on February 7th. We understand that he had
not been doing well for the last few years and was
living in Assisted Living at Brookdale in Wood-
bridge, VA just a couple of miles from his home.
In the late 70s or early 80s, Linda and Gene
Bussard and Brutus and Annabelle went on a
cruise down the Potomac and up to Annapolis and
Baltimore, MD. Every summer after that there has
been a Summer Cruise. Annabelle tells us that one
of the cruises wound up in a storm in the Chesa-
peake. They made it into Kinsale Marina and that
was the start of the "Salty Dog" awards.
Brutus will be buried in Arlington Cemetery. We
will keep you posted about his Memorial service.
Our deepest sympathies go out to Annabelle and
the rest of you who counted Brutus as a friend
and colleague.
Some archival photos of Bruce follow on the next
page.
