PUBLIC WORKS WATER DIVISION
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS...Who can I call if I have concerns about unusual taste, odour or colour in my drinking water? If you obtain your water from a private well contact the BrantCounty Health Unit at 519-753-4937.If you obtain your water from the municipal system, watermainrepairs, construction, flushing, or other maintenance work in yourarea can cause some rust and scale products, which normallyadhere to the inside of the watermain, to break away. This sedimentdisturbance may cause water to appear dirty. Open fire hydrants canalso cause this temporary inconvenience. Though this discolouredwater is safe, it is unappealing and it can stain your laundry. If thiscondition occurs in your system, allow a cold tap to run for five to tenminutes until the water clears. If the condition persists or you wish tospeak to someone concerning water quality, contact the County ofBrant Water Division.
What do I do if the water pipes are leaking? If you experience an internal problem such as a broken water pipein your home or building, you can shut the water off at your mainshut-off valve, usually located in the basement. If the shut-off valveis broken or you are unable to turn it off, contact the Water Divisionto shut off the water at the curb stop. It is the homeowner’s responsibility to repair the inside shut-off valve.Should you ever notice a continuous flow of water in the road, pleasereport it as soon as possible. Watermain breaks may surface as water ponding or flowing on the roadway. A main break can cause the loss of substantial amounts of water and damage the roadway as well.
Are there any Water Conservation measures in place?A County By-Law restricts outdoor water use to every other day between the hours of 7 am to 9 am and 7 pm to 9 pm. Even-numbered municipal addresses are permitted to water on even-numbered days. Odd-numbered municipal addresses are permitted to water on odd-numbered days. There are some exceptions for new planting. For more details refer to the County’s website.
How do I know if my water meter is reading properly?Could there be a leak?If you suspect you may have a leak, turn off all water consumingappliances inside and outside of your home. Read your meter. Ifthe test dial (red triangle) on your meter is spinning, water is flowingthrough the meter. You may also want to monitor your meter readsovernight. Take a reading before you go to bed and a reading firstthing in the morning before you use any water. If the numbers havechanged, this may indicate that there is a leak somewhere in yourhome. Remember that toilets are the number one source of leaks!Should your recorded water use change suddenly for no obviousreason, (lawn watering, more people in the home, away for a longperiod of time), report this to Energy+ Inc. so that it can be investigated.
Should you have specific questions regarding billings andcollections, for water or wastewater, contact Energy+ Inc. at 1-877-871-2215 or customercare@energyplus.ca.
The Water Division is located in the County Administraion Office at 26 Park Ave, Burford.
