Principal’s Sharing

We need to build character and inculcate strong values in our children...and provide them with a broad range of experiences and encourage their interests in non-academic areas, so that they have a sense of belonging to Singapore, so that they want to help fellow Singaporeans and contribute to society and to the school

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong

A Methodist Mission School of 94 yearsWe are committed to the holistic development of every child

so that every child can discover his/her interests, grow his/her passions, and love what he/she is doing.

We always look out for opportunities to encourage our students to apply what they learn, act on their passion and pursue them. We encourage them to ask questions, to develop a mind-set of

pushing boundaries, of wanting to innovate and finding a breakthrough so as to add value to the current situation. And

through the various Values in Action opportunities, school programmes & activities, we inspire our students to develop a servant heart, to be a concerned citizen, always looking out for opportunities to help and support those who are weaker or less

Mathematics Framework

Upper Primary MathematicsAlice and Huda started jogging from the same point of a 5 km track round a park. They started at the same time but in opposite directions. Alice jogged past Huda after 2 km. Both of them did not change their speeds throughout.

Alice took 40 min to complete one round. What was Huda’s jogging speed in m/min?

(PSLE 2016 Paper 2/Q9)

Assessment of students’ level of metacognitionTime Alice took to jog 5000 m → 40 min

Time Alice took to jog 1000 m → 40 ÷ 5 = 8 min

Time Alice took to jog 2000 m → 2 x 8 = 16 min

Distance Huda jogged when they passed each other

→5000 – 2000 = 3000 m

3000 ÷ 16 = 187.5 m/min (Huda’s speed)

Upper Primary Mathematics

Find the time taken by Alice to complete 2 km.

Find the distance that Huda had jogged

After evaluating ‘distance’and ‘time taken’, you willbe able to evaluate the speed of Huda.

Upper Primary MathematicsThe figure shows two stacks of identical ice cream cones. There are 3 cones in the shorter stake and 9 cones in the longer one.

The length of the shorter stack is 14 cm and the length of the longer stack is 26 cm.

(PSLE 2017 Paper 2/Q12)

Ali wants to pack the ice cream cones as a single stack into a box ½ m long. What is the most number of cones he can pack into the box?

(PSLE 2017 Paper 2/Q12)

Upper Primary MathematicsThe figure shows two stacks of identical ice cream cones. There are 3 cones in the shorter stake and 9 cones in the longer one.

The length of the shorter stack is 14 cm and the length of the longer stack is 26 cm.

(PSLE 2017 Paper 2/Q12)

Ali wants to pack the ice cream cones as a single stack into a box ½ m long. What is the most number of cones he can pack into the box?

(PSLE 2017 Paper 2/Q12)

6 parts of the cones = 26 – 14 cm = 12 cm

1 part = 12 ÷ 6 = 2 cm

So, Length of one cone = 14 -2 – 2 = 10 cm

Total length of cones excluding first cone = 50-10 = 40cm

No. of cones excluding first cone = 40 ÷ 2 cm = 20

20 + 1 = 21

John wanted to compare how fast a wooden block can move on different planks using the set-up below. He released the block, measured the distance moved by the block down the plank and the time taken.(a) A shorter plank made of the same material as R was placed at the same height, h. Will the block take a shorter, longer or the same time to reach the bottom of the plank? Explain your answer

Suggested Answer:The wooden block will take a shorter time to reach the bottom of the plank. This is because the plank becomes steeper and the block’s weight has more effect over the friction between the block and plank.

Upper Primary Science

PSLE 2017 Booklet B Q39

(b) John’s results for plank R are shown on this graph. John repeated the experiment with a wooden plank of the same length. The wooden block moved down the plank more slowly.

(i) State which graph, J, K, L or M shows the correct results for the wooden plank.

(ii) Besides the height, h and the length of the plank, state two other variables that John must keep constant for the comparison.

Upper Primary Science

PSLE 2017 Booklet B Q39

(b) John’s results for plank R are shown on this graph. John repeated the experiment with a wooden plank of the same length. The wooden block moved down the plank more slowly.

(i) Graph M. Since the wooden block moved more slowly, it would take more time to reach the bottom of the plank for the same length of plank.

(ii) Mass/Weight of the wooden block. Material of the block must be kept constant.
