cewelcome to DaWeissBrauHow does one design and document the plethora of ideas and decisions required in an architectural proposal? Does the traditional drawing set do justice to the myriad of experiences available, the unique site and environmental strategies enlisted, or the structural scheme considered? Adventures at DaWeissBrau poses a possible solution to the schematic design of an integrated Brewery, Motel and neighborhood Pub. So grab a cold brew and enjoy!

Situated near the Exit 17 on Route 23 in Dundee, MI, DaWeissBrau exists as a figurative and literal bridge in a site with a contextual pairing: 23-East [Dundee]: “Small town america” - one-square downtown next to a bend in the River Raisin [with requisite old mill]. A stop on Hwy 50 between Monroe + Jackson. Historically a farming/ agrarian community with mixed light industry. 23-West [Perimeter]: Cabela’s Hunting Super-store has created its own context quite literally - all sites available for use around Exit 17 are owned by Cabela’s to promote their agenda.

Woah, what is that?!
Kyle, Exit 17 is coming up...
I just can’t wait to see this Elephant everyone’s talking about!
...”Laughin’ on the bus, playin games with the strangers”...
6
This must be that new brewery DaWeissBräu...
...anyways, we have all weekend for Cabela’s!
Hey Let’s check it out!
7
Alright, alright, let’s do it!

10
Hi! We’d like to take the tour!
That will be $3 per person, can I see your IDs? We’ll start in
a few minutes, feel free to peruse the shop!
11
Hi folks, welcome to DaWeissBräu! My name is Arty - I’ll be your guide today.
If you’ll follow me to the Brew House...
12
We brew according to the German tradition of Reinheitsgebot - we only use water, barley, hops and yeast...
What a lame concept.
This guy is full of it...
Here in the brew house malted barley is boiled in these tanks. We strain the mash - feed that to the cows across the way...
13
Down here the yeast cultures are added to aid in fermenting the beer in these vats. Jason over there to my left is testing a sample in the lab
Our architect designed the building to respond to Reinheitsgebot: The Roof grows barley, the south wall is a green house for growing hops, and the remediation pond collects and filters our water.
Hops is then added to counter the sweetness of the malted barley...
The resulting liquid, called “wort” - is transferred to tanks below the gift shop.
14
So, where are all the pipes? This space seems pretty clean and open for a brewery...
The motel above us has vacancies now at $129 a night. It’s a great time in here late at night!
Additionally - the double glass wall behind me regulates the temperature. we use it as greenhouse to grow our hops.

15
Seriously!
And what’s with this motel?! IN the brewery? Crazy!
Hey, get out from behind there! That’s a $500,000 piece of bottling equipment!
16
Bum Bu Bum, movin Beer!
Let’s go Tom! This truck ain’t gonna load itself!
17
Alrighty, we’ve reached the end of the line: Packaging, shipping and storage.
The room behind me is refrigerated storage.
Ok - you now have a choice to make:
Head back to the gift shop...
18
Or follow me over the roof to DaWeissPub for tasting!

Plants naturally phototrope.
SPIKEwall does not seek to assist in phototropism, but instead uses plant material as a dynamic shading devise. Units act as a trellis. External stimuli (light / water) cause the units to move inwards or outwards This gently moves the vines in and out along with the unit optimizing shading or sun penetration at all times of day and year.
