Tankless Water Heater According to the U.S. Department of Energy, water heating is the third largest energy use in homes. As more and more homes integrate green technologies, homeowners are discovering the benefits of tankless water heaters. Unlike storage tank water heaters, tankless water heaters only heat water when needed, which conserves energy. Tankless water heat-ers can reduce energy demand for heating water and save water by providing on demand hot water. In an effort to decrease energy and water demands the City of Sunset Valley offers a rebate of $500.00 for the purchase and installation of a tankless water heater. Purchases and applications must be made within the current fiscal year that runs October 1st through September 30th. For more information on this rebate program, please contact Carolyn Meredith, Public Works Environmental Manager at (512) 891-9103 or Email her at cmeredith@sunsetvalley.org.
Free Pictures with Santa The 3rd Annual Pictures with Santa holiday event hosted by the Community and Economic Development Commi ee was held on Saturday December 7th. Majic 95.5 FM DJ Terry McCormick helped hand out nearly $3,000 worth of prizes and gi s sponsored by our local retailers.

D O I N G B U S I N E S S I N S U N S E T VA L L E Y New to Sunset Valley is the Vitamin Shoppe. Located at the former site of Samuels Diamond on the west side of Brodie, the Vitamin Shoppe is dedicated to helping people fulfill their health and well-ness needs. The Vitamin Shoppe is a specialty retailer of nutritional products ranging from vitamins and min-erals to nutritional supplements, herbs, sports nutrition formulas, homeopathic remedies, and health and beauty aids.
Began as a single store in 1977, the Vitamin Shoppe has opened in more than 500 locations in 42 states and the Island of Puerto Rico. The retailer is based in North Bergen, New Jersey.
What’s in the Works? ERW Waterline Extension The project going on behind La Madeleine is an extension of the existing waterline on Ernest Robles Way across the Sunset Valley Tributary. Existing water lines run from Jones Road south to the creek and from Brodie Lane north to the creek. These existing portions of the line were installed by developers and there is a portion that was never constructed thereby cre-ating two dead end lines with a 1,000 foot gap at the creek crossing. Expansion and connection will increase fire protec-tion capabilities, improve system reliability and reduce water loss and maintenance man-hours caused by line flushing re-quirements.

When it comes to conserving water, small adjustments can have a big impact. For the next few months, you will find wa-ter saving ps around your home to make those small changes.
• When washing dishes by hand, don’t let the water run. Fill one basin with wash water and the other with rinse water. • Dishwashers typically use less water than washing dishes by hand. Energy Star dishwashers save even more water and
energy. • If your dishwasher is new, cut back on rinsing. Newer models clean more thoroughly than older ones. • Designate one glass for your drinking water each day, or refill a water bo le. This will cut down on the number of glasses
to wash. • Soak pots and pans instead of le ng the water run while you scrape them clean. • Use the garbage disposal sparingly. Instead, compost vegetable food waste and save gallons every me. • Wash your fruits and vegetables in a pan of water instead of running water from the tap. • Don’t use running water to thaw food. For water efficiency and food safety, defrost food in the refrigerator. • Install an instant water heater near your kitchen sink so you don’t have to run the water while it heats up. This also re-
duces energy costs. • Keep a pitcher of drinking water in the refrigerator instead of running the tap. This way, every drop goes down you and
not the drain. • Reuse le over water from cooked or steamed foods to start a nutri ous soup, it’s one more way to get eight glasses of
water a day. • Cook food in as li le water as possible. This also helps it retain more nutrients. • Select the proper pan size for cooking. Large pans may require more cooking water than necessary. • If you accidentally drop ice cubes, don’t throw them in the sink. Drop them in a house plant instead. • Collect the water you use while rinsing fruit and vegetables. Use it to water house plants. • When shopping for a new dishwasher, compare water use between models.
