whereabouts to 911. Teas hopped into an old pickup truck and tried to flee the area unsuccessfully. Rumor has it he’s considering a change of occupation.n The City of Malibu collected near-ly $3 million in sales tax revenue in the 2012-2013 fiscal year. The big-gies were destination restaurants, gas stations, grocery stores and a few high-end clothing stores.

DECEMBERn Malibu may soon have a couple of local FM radio stations if the FCC gives the Malibu application the final OK. The reason for two is because FCC rules limit the power and reach of the stations, and long, skinny 27-mile Malibu needs sepa-rate east and west stations to pass muster. In addition to the possibil-ity of National Public Radio, we will finally have an emergency broadcast network to reach all of Malibu—hopefully without dead spots.n Following a lengthy investigation by the FBI and the Federal Dept. of Justice into alleged misconduct, excessive violence and possible cor-ruption in the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, charges were filed in Federal Court against 18 Sheriff ’s deputies, including two lieutenants, three sergeants and 13 deputies.n The Federal EPA took a closer look at the alleged Malibu High environmental health problem and the verdict appears to be that we’re OK. In EPA language, there are no

significant red flags, although there will have to be major cleanup and some of the old window caulking that doesn’t meet current standards will have to be replaced. Most par-ents were relieved, but several are not yet totally convinced.n The proposed Civic Center waste-

water facility may have found a site for a possible home on Civic Center Way near Winter Canyon across from the Maison de Ville condomin-ium complex. The price tag is pro-jected to be a hefty $41 million and, according to the agreement with the Regional Water Quality Control Board, the facility has to be in place and operating by November 2015 within the prohibition area (virtu-ally most of the Civic Center and adjacent residential areas). However, residences aren’t required to hook up until 2019.

Dolphin Award nominations sought

Nominations are being sought for the annual Malibu Times Citizens of the Year Dolphin Awards.

The purpose of the Dolphin Awards program is to recognize out-standing efforts of individual Malibu citizens and, by acknowledging and publicizing their contributions, inspire others.

Readers are invited to submit nominees worthy of being consid-ered for a Dolphin Award, indi-viduals who have made outstanding contributions to improving one or more aspects of Malibu’s commu-nity life.

Dolphins are a very diverse group. Some Dolphins may have many years of achievement; others have only recently found an important way to serve. Some have been involved in multiple activities; others have focused on one or two. Some are business professionals, politicians or

educators, while still others are retir-ees, retailers, restaurateurs, home-makers or students. Their interests are as diverse as they are and range from environmental protection to wildlife rescue to education, literacy, the arts, health and safety, teen pro-grams... the list goes on and on.

To submit a nominee, write at least one page describing your nomi-nee’s contribution and why you think that person should be consid-ered.

Please include enough informa-tion (several paragraphs at least) for the editorial/publishers board to be able to make an informed decision.

The deadline is Jan. 31. Be sure to include his/her con-

tact information. Mail or e-mail to agyork@malibutimes.com and to Knowles@malibutimes.com; 3864 Las Flores Canyon Rd., Malibu, CA 90265.

“I’m not sure we’ve seen the end of it…It’s a group of people who are relatively low-level officers who are facing serious allegations. If their defense is going to be that they were ordered by someone to do it, they’re going to have to tell the world who the higher-ups were that ordered them to do it.”
