How did we get into

Renewable power?

...by transferring

experience & knowledge

from work in similar

industries

Bespoke Machine Build

Using our waste as fuel?

Waste2Energy

combustible waste to produce

7MW of electrical energy

Power from the waves?

AWS Ocean Energy

1:9 Scale Prototype – Loch Ness

This technology is all very new and

exciting?

...but the concepts and technology have been around for

over 30years

...the challenge comes making them economically viable

This has happened before in history!Spruce Goose vs Airbus A380

•In 1947 – maiden flight of

the ‘spruce goose’

•Cost $23million

•Capability to carry 700

passengers

•Commercial failure

because it was ‘ahead of its

time’

•There wasn’t a demand for

this type of aeroplane

•In 2007 – maiden flight of

the airbus A380

•Cost $11 billion

•Roughly the same size and

payload

•21st century was the right

time for this concept of

plane – The Demand was

there..

•Design, Engineering &

Technology have made it

commercially viable

So what is a Deep Dive all about?

‘Deep dive’ session

90 – Concept Ideas

30 – Possible solutions

10 – Demonstrator Prototypes

1day

Objective:- Create fresh new solutions to difficult problems

3 Stages 1. Understanding

& Simplifying the

Problem

2. Intensive 1 day

workshop

3. Idea Synthesis

2-3 weeks

How do you get the best value in 1 day from 9 people?

• The right people

• The right environment

• The right culture

• Solving the right problem!

• Can do attitude

• Build & Make to Understand

• Sense of Urgency

• Lots of energy & fun!

Our Work Environment

Our Workshop

Where is the value generated?

• Although the workshop day is the focus of a deep dive intervention, the value comes after....

• The secret lies in the synthesis

• So many thoughts are generated the ‘noise’ has to be removed in order to generate the valuable IP

• Organising our thoughts from this session took nearly 2 weeks before it was ready to present to AWS

Success is 10 percent inspiration and 90

percent perspiration.Edison

What did it achieve for AWS?

• Opened their eyes to a host of new solutions

• Invigorated AWS to re think some pre connived barriers

• The seeds of these ideas have been taken forward and developed

• Result has been new IP and which has moved AWS towards their goal.....

“In developing the design of the AWS-III,

we believe we have addressed the

fundamental barriers to delivering

practical wave energy. We have

eliminated moving mechanical parts

in contact with sea-water by using a

novel system of flexible diaphragms

arranged around a steel hull and

incorporating air turbines.”

Its an exciting time to be involved in Marine

Power....

Like the 1960’s a space race going on!

The technology is being developed quickly

and design is at the heart of it all, we are

really excited to be involved...

We’d love to think that the concept of the ‘Deep Dive’

session is new, but just like most patent applications

we are building on the ideas & techniques of others

Here is a great example from over 40 years ago...
