Searching For A Solution

Student: Yicheng Han (Charley)

Tutor: Lyle Talbot

Class: Thursday Morning

Discipline: Architecture

Architecture is not simply building, it is much more of something else.

Well

Is it… Art? Or

Frames & Structures? Plans & Sections?

Morphological Mappings? Landforms & Sculptures?

Collage of ideas/pictures/stories/philosophies?

Implementation of imaginations?

Site – Exploration & Investigation

Circulation & Surrounding Context

History: From a lake to Concrete Lawn

Frames & Grid – Attempt 1

Think: What purpose? A dwelling? A museum atrium? A practical attempt of resolving forces through

materials and structures? A step taken of not throwing away mailed advertisements?

Understanding & Outcome:

• Recycled base is unsolid and unreliable.

• Very accurate measurements of cutting angles are needed.

• Metal strings are very hard to implement, especially it was considered beyond decoration but a

support of forces.

• Expected outcome could not be reached, this model was abandoned.

Frames & Grid – Attempt 2

• Reviewing lecture proved helpful.

• The idea of multiplication of one

dimensional units inspired me.

• I thought: frame is the

multiplication or repetition in a

sense, and structure is to put

planes of frames together.

• This structure is a combination of 3 planes: Sky, Spectacle &

Ground.

• Consecutively, the number of beams increase from sky to

Ground.

• Sky symbolises freedom – fewest beams.

• Spectacle symbolises world – several beams that protect people

while allowing them to see clearly their surroundings.

• Ground symbolises a solid foundation – many beams uniformly

constructed.

Landforming – Extrusions & Subtractions

• A park/children – adult playground.

• A discussion of colours, a geometrical conflict and harmonisation.

• Sculptural & Functional.

• Ideas were generated from triangles, bus stations and seating platforms.

Assemblage – New perspective, New Perception*Rethink: what is frame & structure? What is landform?

• Frame is also a collage of colours.

• Landform does not have to be a place for human experience, it can

be simple sculpture that does not make the least sense.

This model is

inspired by

the idea of

interference,

that landform

and structures

and frames

encroach on

each other’s

territory.

Debate:

A desperate struggle, when the pigeon fell onto his lap, inked in its blood,

carrying a message, the war is coming. That night he went to the prophecy, it

said that a distant foreign nation encroaches on his empire, their men are

covered in steel, wielding swords enchanted with fire. They burn down villages,

leaving the windmill spinning alone by itself, they conquer the cities, throwing

his people in the fire of hell. “And you, my lord,” said the prophet “You are chosen

to be our hero. Lead us to a certain death but a victorious one.”

Final Project - Starting Over

Rethink: How? What? So?

All my ideas started from

“Frame: a multiplication of 1 –

dimensional units”.

Then towards function, then

think what is Union Lawn, what

will it be if amendment occur?

Should we retain its original

character/functions?

Final Project

Trimmed meadow ground was added to the bare concrete grounds.

The material is switched from metal to timber.

Centric/symbolistic sculpture in the middle while the rest of the

landscape is divided into three sections, all provide both seating & fun

– walking opportunities for socialising purposes.

After careful

considerations, I

concluded that it

was unnecessary

to draw sections,

for that elevation

shows the most

information and

is clearest in its

expressions of

objects.
