What is athlete development about?

““A performer (participant)-A performer (participant)-centred approach to achieving centred approach to achieving optimal development allowing optimal development allowing

athlete to achieve his / her athlete to achieve his / her fullest potential”fullest potential”

• Academies

Purpose of Academies

To provide an opportunity for those with performance potential to access quality

sports-specific coaching and support services to enable them to further develop

towards National Standards.

“The support services are the icing on the cake – they are sophisticated and make the final 5% difference. In some instances the cake hasn’t yet been properly baked. The athletes are only at 60% of their capacity.”

Area manager contract reviews, p.29

“There is a need to support athletes aspiring to AIS programmes without

compromising AIS focus”Area Institute of Sport Evaluation 2004,

p.25

RJG monitoring report:• Benefits to the players in terms of increased access to coaches within

a specific context• Funding not sustainable• No National consistency in terms of ages of application, criteria and

delivery mechanisms• Rarely full integration in the planning between LA/SGB/AIS in terms of

designing the RJG programme & application• Need for A managed programme for athletes to progress through or

be channeled back into sport (rather having acceptance of a high drop-out rate)

• Need for a system that has elements that are transferable between sports.

Consultation events…..

• Total of 24 events• SportTayside review & Governance audit• LTPD Consultations:

• SSA COO group• Meetings with individual sports CEOs & Lead officers• National Lead Officers group

• RSP & Academies consultations:• Internal (AE, WO, Facilities, Policy)• SIS / AIS• LA’s (Area Institute Management boards) x 7 (+ Islands Forum)• SGBs x 6• SSA• SDS• Advisory group with reps from all the above

Long Term Player DevelopmentFeedback

• Positive• How can sportscotland engage with Physical Education to ensure

LTPD principles are delivered within the PE curriculum• Culture within the sport

• Parents• Coaching:

• Education• Resources to support education delivery• Resources to empower sessional delivery

• Reward & recognition of development role• Competition:

• Nature• Frequency• Outcome expectation

Regional Sports PartnershipsFeedback

• Funding• Opportunity for greater integration• Club Development• Provision of Quality Coaching • Professional Staff• Facility Development• Capacity of Partners for Strategic Partnerships• Concerns over another layer of bureaucracy

Regional Sports PartnershipsAim

• Strengthen the middle part of the player development pathway• Continuing participation in sport• Develop athletes & coaches with ability and desire

• One coherent strategy and structure between local, regional & national bodies• Co-ordinate the delivery of LTPD pathways from

Grassroots to elite (incorporating academy programmes)• Clear roles & responsibilities• Avoid duplication & gaps

Regional Sports Partnerships Key Issues:

• Big Questions• Which regions?• Which sports?

• Governance Structures• Flexibility• Club Development

• Local Sports Councils

• Bureaucracy

Academy Feedback

• “Academy” term replaced by “?”• Acceptance of need• Driven by sports specific coaching

• Full-time or part-time coaching contracts• Potential partnership posts with AIS• Strength & Conditioning coaches

• Integrated within the player development pathway & RSP delivery (not a separate structure)

• Coach as well as athlete development• Flexible Delivery
