Charities in the Digital Age

Future-proofing

What’s happening in the world?

What’s around the corner?

What Social Challenges will change?

How will the public donate?

How does Libra work?

Cash in a local currency, get Libra, spend them like cash without big transaction fees or your real name attached, cash them out whenever you want.

Calibra Wallet

The wallet will be available in Messenger, WhatsApp and as a standalone app — and we expect to launch in 2020.

How will you show social impact?

Disruption is a certainty….

Will digital disruption change the Charity business model?

A platform is a business model that creates value by

facilitating exchanges between two or more

interdependent groups, usually consumers and

producers. It doesn’t directly create and control inventory

via a supply chain the way linear businesses do.

How can we build platforms for good?

The answer to scalability?

Uber and Airbnb turned whole industries upside down by doing things in an entirely new way. Rather than running their own taxis or hotels, they built platforms on which taxi-renting and B&B-booking could easily be done.

Platforms for good?

Campaigning - 38 Degrees, Causes

Workplace organising - Organise

Fundraising - JustGiving, Fundly, Exponential

Human Rights and Crisis response – Ushahidi

Open Innovation - OpenIDEO

First aid - GoodSAM

HomePointr, a Scottish service that provides a matching service for homeless support workers seeking supported accommodation for new tenants who have been homeless.

Replicate your social Good for Free – and all benefit at the same time

Are you brave enough to create a competitor to your Charity??

What would Charity 2.0 look like?

What if it cannibalised your organisation?

How could users needs be met via a

platform?

What could your Charity look like as a platform? National/Global/Local?

What is digital transformation?

‘Digital transformation is about changing processes and

practices to help the organisation compete effectively in

an increasingly digital world’

Are you transforming or digitising?

What it’s not?

Something you simply ‘buy in’ or adopt overnight

"Our IT department are great – they’ll work it out”

… making your IT work OK…..ish

A time or cost issue

Simply put – it’s about the transformation of People, Processes and Technology

The New Reality is a research study about how digital technology will deliver the next step-change in social impact

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bxfi21joAmYPUmRVSlZ0RGRoc1E/view

Key Takeaways

• The next stage of digital for Charities is not Fundraising and Marketing

• Until sector leadership stops delegating responsibility for digital we’re not

going to get very far

• Digital services will deliver greater value than anyone can imagine (but

first we need to address the culture and infrastructure issues that are

standing in the way)

And what if you don’t?

What are the benefits?

• Cost reductions

• Improved productivity

• Empowered Staff

• Empowered Beneficiaries

• Improved visibility & impact

• Increased geographic reach

Are we doing things differently or better?

Elf case study

It’s not just about the new… utilise what you have!

What do DL4SE learners have to say about doing things differently, digitally?

"Digital Leadership is not about being an expert on all the technology out there. It is about leading your organisation to

integrate “digital” into everything you do and stop treating it as a thing in isolation. The course gives you some very practical and

concrete ways to approach this. "Susi Calder, SPARK Somerset

"Digital Leadership is not about worrying about being left behind, it is about making sure you have a thriving business in the future."Susi Calder, SPARK Somerset

"10 months ago, you wouldn't imagine it was possible for me, and the charity, to move so far, but the Digital Leadership Programme has given me the foresight, confidence and skills to act now. Changes implemented have

also saved us £100k. The programme has created a charity that is fit for the 21st Century. Thank You Cosmic!"

Mags Naylor, ELF

Doing things differently, digitally

• Changed internal processes, e.g. expenses, rotas, board meeting minutes – saving time.

• Made better use of O365 and software they already pay for, to improve internal systems, and delivering services.

• Developed transactional websites

• Reviewed their service delivery model, from a customer-focussed perspective.

• Moved their files and data into the cloud, making flexible working easier.

• Engaged and inspired staff, volunteers and board. Grown in confidence, new perspectives.

Learners' organisations have undertaken a range of practical changes, including:

What do current learners have to say

about doing things digitally?

Are you fit for it?

Transformation is a marathon

Maturity is Culture

Requires as much motivation as restraint

As much autonomy as discipline

The pace is unrelenting
