Students will complete the worksheet that goes with the assignment.

Guided discussion on the naming of covalent compounds being different from ionic compounds.

Naming Molecular Compounds

Chemical Bonds

Three basic types of bonds: Ionic

Metals and nonmetals Electrostatic attraction

between ions Covalent

Nonmetals only Sharing of electrons

Metallic Metal atoms bonded to

several other atoms

Common Names

A lot of chemicals have common names as well as the proper IUPAC name.

Some chemicals that should always be named by common name and never named by the IUPAC method are: H2O water, not dihydrogen monoxide

NH3 ammonia, not nitrogen trihydride

CH4 methane, not carbon tetrahydride

Remember:

BrINClHOF

These elements only exist as PAIRS. Note that when they combine to make compounds, they are no longer elements so they are no longer in pairs!

More Common Names - Elements that exist as diatomics

How do I name Covalent Compounds?

Prefix System (binary compounds)

1. Less electronegative atom comes first.

2. Add prefixes to indicate # of atoms. Omit mono- prefix on the FIRST element. ALWAYS add a prefix in front of the second element.

3. Change the ending of the second element to -ide.

Practice: Name the following covalent compounds

1) CO - 2) SO2

3) SO3 4) N2O

5) NO 6) N2O3

7) CCl4 8) P5H10

9) SiH5 10) O3F6

Practice: Name the following covalent compounds

1) CO – Carbon Monoxide 2) SO2 – Sulfur Dioxide

3) SO3 – Sulfur Trioxide 4) N2O – Dinitrogen Monoxide

5) NO – Nitrogen Monoxide 6) N2O3 – Dinitrogen Trioxide

7) CCl4 – Carbon Tetrachloride

8) P5H10 – Pentaphosphorus Decahydride

9) SiH5 – Silicon Pentahydride

10) O3F6 – Trioxygen Hexafluoride

Writing Binary Covalent Formulas

Write the symbols for the elements in the order mentioned in the name.

Write subscripts indicated by the prefixes. If the first part of the name has no prefix, assume it is mono-.

Your turn: Write the formulas for the following compounds

1) Dihydrogen Dioxide 2) Pentaphosphorus Decachloride

3) Sulfur Tetroxide 4) Nitrogen Trihydride

5) Nitrogen Tetrahydride 6) Trinitrogen Nonahydride

7) Disulfur Dichloride 8) Hexaselenium Tetraphosphide

Your turn: Write the formulas for the following compounds

1) Dihydrogen Dioxide – H2O2

2) Pentaphosphorus Decachloride – P5Cl10

3) Sulfur Tetroxide – SO4 4) Nitrogen Trihydride – NH3

(bonus points if you said ammonia!)

5) Nitrogen Tetrahydride – NH4

6) Trinitrogen Nonahydride – N3H9

7) Disulfur Dichloride – S2Cl2

8) Hexaselenium Tetraphosphide – Se6P4
