Empathize – user persona

Goal: to identify and better understand the people affected by the problem statement. They are potential users of the design solution.

Why: gaining an appreciation and understanding of a potential user’s needs, wants, motivations, behaviours and barriers helps us design more meaningful solutions to a problem.

4

Create a user persona

Who are they?Age, gender, likes and dislikes

What makes them unique?Needs, wants, hopes and fears

What motivates them?Peers, community, self and family

How do they behave?Habits, behaviours and activities

Why do they behave this way?Life conditions, environment and ability

What are their barriers?Financial, social, time and ability

5

Empathy map

Goal: to summarize how a potential user relates to the design challenge (sustainable energy future).

Why: an empathy map helps create a deeper understanding of the perspective of a potential user.

6

Empathy mapWhat actions might your user do in relation to sustainable energy? How might your user think and

feel about sustainable energy?
