O’CEBREIROSPAIN, 1300

In the Eucharistic Miracle ofO’Cebreiro, during the Mass, the Host that changed toFlesh and the wine to Bloodwas expelled from the chaliceand stained corporal. The Lord performed this prodigy in order to sustain the little faith of the priestthat did not believe in theReal Presence of Jesus in theEucharist. To this day, the sacred relics of the miracleare guarded near the churchwhere this prodigy took placeand numerous pilgrims gothere annually to give them praise.

ne icy winter in 1300 a Benedictine priestwas celebrating the sacred Mass in a chapelbeside the church of the convent of

O’Cebreiro. On that miserable day of unceasingsnow and unbearably freezing wind, he thoughtthat no one would dare show up for Mass. Hewas wrong. A farmer from Barxamaior, by thename of Juan Santín, left the convent to attendMass. The priest saying Mass, who did notbelieve in the Real Presence of Christ in the mostholy sacrament, despised in his heart the farmer’ssacrifice of good will. He began in this way tocelebrate the Mass and immediately after havingprofessed the words of the consecration, the Hostchanged to Flesh and the wine to Blood wasexpelled from the chalice and stained the corporal. At that very moment, it seemed that even thehead of the wooden statue of the Madonna was

leaning in adoration. The people today call herthe “Madonna of the Sacred Miracle”. TheLord had wanted to open the eyes of the incred-ulous priest who had doubted and compensatethe farmer for his great devotion. For almosttwo hundred years the Host changed to Fleshwas left on the paten until Queen Isabella learned about the miracle when she passedthrough O’Cebreiro while doing a pilgrimagein Santiago de Compostela.

The queen immediately had a precious crystal shrine custom made to holdthe miraculous Host, the chalice and the paten, which to this day, can be praised in this church.Every year on the feast days of Corpus Christi,August 15th and September 8th, the relics aretaken in procession along with the Madonna.

Among the most documented testimonials of themiracle are the bull of Pope Innocent the 8th of1487 and that of Pope Alexander the 7th of 1496and an account by Father Yepes.
