The European Union’s policies have an impact on, and are impacted upon by, the wider world – foreign and security policy,

trade policy, enlargement policy, environmental and energy policies, development assistance and humanitarian aid, etc.

This powerpoint highlights some of the key sources that can be used to find information in these areas.

An economic giant but a political dwarf

Some facts…

• Population: almost 500 million (third largest after India and China)• Greatest share of world trade• Generates 25% of global wealth• The € is the second international currency of the world• Largest provider of development assistance in the world• Seen as a leader on climate change reform• Currently, 12 missions in the name of ESDP (from Georgia and Kosovo to Afghanistan and Sudan - and the waters off Somalia (and ten completed)
