INTRODUCTION

• Indian-European Union relations date back to the

1960s.

• India was one of the first countries to establish

relations with what is now the European

Union(EU)

• The two signed bilateral agreements in 1973, when

the United Kingdom joined.

• The most recent cooperation agreement was

signed in 1994 and an action plan was signed in

2005.

• As of April 2007 the Commission is pursuing a

free trade agreement with India.

• UK-India’s 5th leading trade partner.

• India is UK's 15th largest export market.

• India exports- textiles and readymade garments, gems and jewellery,footwear, leather and leather goods, engineering goods, metalmanufactures, power generating equipment, software services,pharmaceuticals, chemicals, marine products, rice, tea, nuts, preservedfruits, vegetables.

•India's imports- non-ferrous metals, gold, rough diamonds, powergenerating and telecom equipment, transport equipment, industrialmachinery and chemicals.

• German exports to India - machinery, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, electro technical goods, vehicles and iron and steel.

• German imports from India - cotton garments and fabrics, leather and leather goods, silk fabrics, chemical and pharmaceutical products and garments and carpets and rugs as well as precious stones.

• In 2007-2008, the Indo-German trade

stood at 12.07 billion Euros and it is

projected to cross 30 billion Euros in 2010.

• Greek imports from India include cotton, synthetic fibres, fabrics, vehicles,

iron, steel and fruit, while

• Greek exports to India include fibres, fertilizers, organic chemicals,

• Indian exports to Italy include silk, furnishing, and linen.

• Italian exports coming to India are Apparatus, Electrical

appliances,Electrotechnics ,Metallurgy, Precision instruments and Tools.

SWITZERLAND

• Swiss exports to India include Machinery, Instruments & Apparatus,

Precious metals , jewellery and coins, Metal and metal products, Watches,

Plastic and rubber products ,vehicles and airplanes.

• Swiss imports to India include Textiles, Chemical and pharmaceuticals,

Precious metals, jewellery and coins, Agricultural produce, Machinery,

Leather goods, shoes, umbrellas ,Metal good and Watches.

India• Addidas of Germany is one of the top company in India in terms

of sports products.

• Germany’s Volkswagon have just entered the Indian markets.

• Britain’s Vodafone have also proven their metal in the Indian markets when Hutch was rebranded to Vodafone on September 21, 2007.

• Cantabil of Italy is also flourishing in India.

• Apart from all these companies Perfumes of France like Cobra,etc., swiss watches and Greek Ships are in great demand in India.

During the India-EU Summit held at Lisbon in June 2000, it was agreed that an Indo-EU Working Group (WG) on Information Society would be set up for promoting bilateral cooperation in all areas of ICT

Areas of Common Interest –

The EU and India have agreed to

Enhance EU-India co-operation in the Seventh Framework Programme

Exchange views on a regular basis on - e-commerce, internet governance, universal service

Encourage India-EU joint research proposals and collaborative activities in 4G, e-government, e-education and e-health

Exchange views on telecommunication spectrum management and on roaming and interoperability of telecommunication services

Work towards GEANT-ERNET connectivity.

JWG meeting - The sixth JWG meeting was held in March 2009 at Brussels. where Indian side expressed the desire to proactively participate in development of the technology for mutual benefits in which resources can be pooled together. Some of the possible areas for strategic cooperation are standards for e-Governance, e-Security, knowledge network, biometrics, telecom like energy efficiency & alternate energy source and automated spectrum monitoring, open technologies/open source and institutional structure and mechanism.

Science and technology -> bilateral cooperation; Grids, new network architectures, e-health and entrepreneurship are among the ICT themes

Republic of Bulgaria

was signed in May 2006

Areas of Common Interest - Software & hardware industries, ICT application, e-governance, e-commerce, e-business, capacity building & HRD, STPs, SMEs and joint research projects

Joint Working Group - The third meeting of the India-Bulgaria Joint Forum on ICT was held in October 2007 in New Delhi and identified e-Governance, Technology Park, ICT Education, R&D and Info Security as areas for strengthening of cooperation in ICT.

France

MOU was signed in September 2000

Areas of Common Interest - Software development, IT enabled services, telemedicine, cyber education, electronic commerce, electronic governance, information security & cyber crime, human resource development, research, design and development and exploring third country markets

Joint Working Group - The seventh meeting of the JWG was held in October 2009 at Paris and discussed issues like French experience in broadband and Wimax, Digital economy, Spectrum, Policy for innovation and competitiveness of SME/clusters and E-governance.
